From letter dated 1977 by Thelma Louise Rugg: 'My great grandfather, Martin Van Buren was a cousin of the former President. I have known this ever since I was a little girl. I also heard my mother, Lulu Van Buren Rugg, talk about this when she and her brother, Grant Van Buren were visting us when we lived in Royal Oak Mich in 1940.' The Martin Van Buren bible was published at Cooperstown, NY in 1834. The Vineland, NJ Historical society was contacted in Aug 1991. They no longer had the bible. From the Oswego county, NY land deeds. Martin purchased 58 acres in lot 51, east Albion, Oswego county, NY in March 1847. It is located 1/2 mile south of South Albion, NY. The cost was $325. In March 1848 he purchased 25 acres in lot 26, east Albion, Oswego county, NY. The cost was $196. It is located 3 miles north of South Albion. Recorded in liber 46, page 231, SLC film #1011782; and liber 48, page 235, SLC film #1011783. Extensive research by Richard Robert Moran HAS NOT positively IDENTIFIED Martin Van Buren's PARENTS. Evidence indicates they were probably Martin Van Buren and Elizabeth Spraker. They were residing in Montgomery Co. in the early 1800's. Catherine Pickens cousins were baptized at and near Canajoharie, NY in 1790's - 1810's along with some of Martin Van Buren and Elizabeth Spraker children.

Grandaughter Maxine Rugg related that her mother LuLu told how Charles had a team of hourses that pulled boats down the Erie Canal in NY.
Kalkaska, Kalkaska, MI newpaper: "Charles VanBuren of Clearwater township, Kalkaska County, died on Wednesday, April 6, 1910, age 70 years, 3 months and 3 days. He was born in Otsego County, State of New York, on the third day of January, 1840. Both of his parents were also natives of New York. He enlisted in Company K., 110th New York Volunteers, in the War of Rebellion and was engaged in the Bank's expedition. After being with his regiment for one year he was dischared for physical disability. He came to Michigan in 1882 and had lived in the township of Clearwater ever since. His health failing, he sold his farm and resided in Rapid City since last fall. He leaves a wife, five children and one adopted daughter, besides several granchildren to mourn his loss. He was converted to christianity early in life and had endeavered to live consistently ever since, dying strong in the faith of his Master. He has entered into the rest that remains for the people of God. His funeral was attended by the G.A.R., at Rapid City in the Methodist church, where the services were held. It was conducted by members of Col. Baker Post of Kalkaska, and the body was interred in Evergreen cemetery at that place, Rev. R. Towers officiating." [G.A.R. = Grand Army of the Republic]
Biographical History of Northern Michigan: "Charles Van Buren. The history of Kalkaska county is not a very old one. It is the record of the steady growth of a community planted in the wilderness within the last half century and has reached its magnitude of today without other aids than those of industry. The people who redeemed its wilderness fastnesses were strong-armed, hardy sons of the soil who hesitated at no difficulty and for whom hardships had little to appall. The early pioneers, having blazed the path of civilization to this part of the state, finished their labors and passed from the scene, leaving the country to the possession of their descendants and to others who came at a later period and builded on the foundation which they laid so broad and deep. Among the latter class is the prominent farmer and enterprising citizen by whose name this article is introduced. While his arrival was not as early as some, yet he came in the fomative period and has done much to develop the wonderful resources of a county that now occupies a proud position among the progressive and enlightened sections of Michigan. Charles Van Buren was born in Otsego, Otsego County, New York, on the 3d of January, 1840, and is the son of Martin and Catherine (Pickens) VanBuren, both also natives of the Empire state. They were the parents of eleven children, eight sons and three daughters, of which family the subject was the fifth child in order of birth. Both parents died when about the age of eighty years, the father's death occurring in Oswego county, New York, and the mother's in Allegany county, that state. When Charles VanBuren was a small boy the family removed to Oswego, New York, where he was reared to manhood on his father's farm and where he secured a good education in the common schools. In August, 1862, when the fires of rebellion were burning fiercely in the South and the nation's integrity was jeopardized, Mr. VanBuren offered his services and enlisted in Company K, One Hundred and Tenth Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry, with which command he served about one year, when he was discharged because of physical disability. His regiment was under the command of General Banks and participated in the battle at Port Hudson and in the Red River campaign, besides many other minor engagements and other arduous duties. Returning home, Mr. VanBuren engaged in farming and so continued until the spring of 1882, when he came to Michigan and settled on the farm which he now owns, and which is located in section 13, Clearwater township, Kalkaska county. His first purchase was forty acres of timber land, to which he added later eighty acres, but subsequently disposed of the latter tract, after partially clearing it. The present farmstead has been cleared by the subject and he now has thirty acres in active cultivation, raising all the crops common to this lattitude, and he also gives some special attention to fruit culture, having about five acres planted to apple and plum trees, which have proved a source of considerable profit to the owner. Mr. VanBuren has erected tasty and substantial buildings on the place and all departments of the enterprise receive his careful and thoughtful attention. On June 12, 1861, at Oswego, New York. Mr. VanBuren was married to Miss Mary E. Scriber, who was born in Oswego county, New York, May 22, 1845, and is a daughter of Stephen and Olive (Palmer) Scriber, both natives of New York state. The father died in Onondago county, New York, at the age of seventy-six years, and the mother's death occurred in Traverse City, Michigan, when sixty-two years old. Of their familty of six childern, Mrs. VanBuren was the second born. She was reared in Oswego county, New York, and there received her education. Mr. and Mrs. VanBuren are the parents of six childern, namely: Alice A. is the wife of Charles Manley; Charles E.; Eva M. is the wife of Jacob Buckle; Walter F.; Lulu B. is the wife of Edd D. Rugg; Grant G. Mr. VanBuren has taken an active part in the public affairs of his township and has served four years as justice of the peace, two years as highway commissioner, and also as member of the board of review and in several of the school offices. Fraternally, he is a member of Colonel Baker Post, No. 84, Grand Army of the Republic, while religiously, he and his wife are active members of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. VanBuren is a progressive farmer and for years he had been a close and careful student of agricultural science, being familiar with the nature of soils and their adaptabilty to the various crops, besides knowning by practical experience how to obtain the most satisfactory results from the labor and time expended. He is well known in this section and has so ordered his life as to gain the respect and confidence of all with whom he has been brought in contact."

In 1912 Thelma Louise Rugg went with immediate family to Syracuse, NY to visit Mary Elizabeth Scriber. Mary was quite rich. Scriber is a German name. She saw Mary's brother. Two days before the death of Thelma Louise Rugg she shared with Richard Robert Moran how she had dreamed of this early childhood visit with her grandmother, Mary Scriber. Verna Lu Marie Johnson has a green pitcher and 4 glass set that was Mary Elizabeth Scriber's which Mary received as wedding gift.

Lulu Belle Van Buren, the daughter of Charles and Mary Van Buren, was born in New York state, August 28, 1880 and died June 22, 1969 at the Petoskey Geriatrics and Care Center at the age of 88. She came to Michigan at an early age with her parents who were early pioneers in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County. She was married to Edward Rugg, December 25, 1901 and is survived by four children, Earl Rugg of Bisbee, Arizona, Mrs. Alvah (Thelma) Johnson, of Alden, Mrs. Leonard (Helen) Kizer of Morley, and Mrs. Willard (Maxine) Ryckman of Kalkaska, 14 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Mrs. Rugg was preceded in death by her husband and one son, Donovan, one granddaughter and two great grandchildren. She was a member of the People Church, Bethany Circle, Rebekah Lodge, Past Noble Grand Club and the Golden Age Club. Funeral services were held at the Schwartz-Wolfe Funeral Home, Tuesday, June 24, 1969 at 2 o'clock, Rev. Donald Beyer of St. Paul Lutheran Church officiating, and interment at Evergreen cemetery, Kalkaska."

"Ex-Kalkaska Sheriff - Dies; Rites Tuesday. Kalkaska. - E. D. Rugg, 65, former Kalkaska county sheriff, died Saturday at his home here. Born in Rapid River township, he had been a lifelong resident of the county except for one year spent in Idaho. He served as sheriff from 1916 to 1929, moving then to Idaho, but returned in 1921 to act as foreman of county roads. He also had been employed by the state highway department division here as a foreman for three years and from 1928 until 1939, when he retired, ran a gasoline station. Surviving are the widow, Lula Belle; two sons, Earl of Grand Rapids and Don of Detroit; three daughters, Mrs. Maxine Ryckman of Kalkaska, Mrs. Helen Kizer of Morley and Mrs. Thelma Johnson of Detroit; three brothers, James of Middleville, Ray of Grand Rapids and John of Rapid City. Funeral services will be held at 2 Tuesday at the Berg funeral home, with burial in Evergreen cemetery."

"Funeral Rites held Tuesday Afternoon, Berg Funeral Home. Edward D. Rugg, prominent resident of Kalkaska county all his life, passed away at his home on Saturday, July 24, 1943. He was born in Rapid River township February 20, 1878, having attained the age of 65 years at the time of his death. Mr. Rugg was engaged in farming, at which time he was elected to public officer as County Road Commissioner. In the year 1916 he was elected sheriff of the county, which he held until June 1920, when he resigned and moved to Idaho. He again moved back to his home county in 1921, and was foreman of County Roads from 1921 to 1923. For a few years thereafter he was engaged in the lumber industry. He also served as foreman of State Highway Department for Kalkaska county, from 1925 to 1928, when he engaged in operating a gas station. In 1929 he found it necessary to retire on account of ill health. Deceased was always active in anything pertaining to the betterment of the community and county, and had many friends who join the relatives in mourning his demise. Surviving are the widow, Lula Belle; two sons, Earl of Grand Rapids and Don of Detroit; three daughters, Mrs. Maxine Ryckman of Kalkaska, Mrs. Helen Kizer of Morley and Mrs. Thelma Johnson of Detroit; three brothers, James of Middleville, Ray of Grand Rapids and John of Rapid City, also ten grand children. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Berg Funeral Home, Rev. A. R. Ellis officiating, and burial was made in Evergreen cemetery."

Mr. Rugg was born Jan 21, 1903, in Clearwater Twp., Kalkaska County, son of Edward and Lulu Van Buren Rugg. A dedicated member of the Jehovah Witness, for forty years he served congregations in souther Mich, Tenn, and Ariz. At his death, he was a beloved member of the Plainwell Congregation. Surviving are his wife, Marguerite; one daughter, Mrs. Joylene O'Neill of Grand Rapids; one son, Merlyn of Kalamazoo; 3 sisters, Mrs. Thelma Johnson of Florida, Mrs. Helen Kizer of Morley, Mich, Mrs. Maxine Ryckman of Kalkaska; 6 grandsons; 5 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donovan. Services were held Jan 27, at the Marshall-Gren Chapel, Plainwell, Mr. Terry La Fountain, officiating. He was laid to rest in Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell."

"My life history by Marguerite Merry Johnson:
I was born December 25th, 1905 in Kalkaska County on my grandfathers farm, I had a two year old older brother Cecil and two years after my birth another brother Alvah was born. When I was ten, another brother Clifford was born, who lived only six months. Soon my parents divorced and we went to live with my grandparents in Rapid City. I helped cook for eight people. Sometimes I placed a lesson for the day on the warming oven of the wood stovewhile I baked pancakes. I was on the girls basketball team and was in school plays. I always had the comedy part. While I lived with my grandparents they built a new stone house which is still a landmark in Rapid City today. After high school I enrolled in Detroit Business College, and afterwards gained employment in the office of Detroit Cleveland Navigation Company on the Detroit river for the travel agent. I then went to county Normal in Kalkaska and then on to Michigan State College in Ypsilanti to obtain a teaching certificate. One summer when home from teaching I was invited to conduct a young peoples meeting at the Methodist church. As the meeting was about to begin, I saw Earl Rugg walk in. He asked me for a date that night. This was the beginning of our courtship and we were married 6 months later May 30, 1927. (Daughter Note: Mother and Dad Eloped.) We moved to Grand Rapids, this is where we raised our family Merlyn and Joylene. These were the depression years but Earl always had work. I returned to teaching when the children were older to help out. We had been a family of Witnesses' for many years as the truth was brought to us in Grand Rapids when Merlyn was three years old. As a family, we were active in Jehovah's service. In fact we were part of the original congregation of 13 Witnesses. It has been a privilege to announce an incoming Kingdom that would bring many blessings to all mankind. We sold our home to move where the need was greater. We were in Tennessee for there years, and Arizona for 6 years. We moved back to Michigan because of Dads health. He died Jan 24, 1979. He was a kind and devoted husband and father and I look forward to seeing him again as Jehovah's faithful servant in the resurrection. I am proud of my six grandsons and twelve great grandchildren, and of course my children. It has been as varied life but very rewarding. Jehovah has always been my strength and refuge. I hope to serve him faithfully as long as I can."

"Don Rugg passes in Detroit Monday. Donovan Leslie Rugg of Detroit passes away Monday, May 26, at the age of 53. He was born October 8, 1904, in Rapid River Twp., the son of Edward and Lulu Rugg. Mr. Rugg preceeded his son in death. Don Rugg was a resident of Kalkaska County until about 15 years ago when he moved to Detroit to make his home. He attended Kalkaska High school and was a member of the Union Church of Kalkaska. Surviving besides his wife, Murice, are two daughters, Mrs. Sally Johnson and Mrs. Marilyn Gronato; one son Edward, all of Detroit; three sisters, Mrs. Thelma Johnson, Detroit, Mrs. Helen Kizer, Morley, and Mrs. Maxine Ryckman of Kalkaska; one brother, Earl, of Dickson, Tennessee; also one gradson, Roy Johnson III. Funeral services are Thursday, May 29, at 2:00 p.m. from the Berg-Schwatz Home with Rev. Odell Carlisle officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery."

Mr. Johnson was born February 23, 1908 in Clearwater township. He retired from the Post Office department in 1966. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Rugg Johnson, whom he married May 24, 1930 in Toledo, Ohio. Also surviving are two sons, Alvah Jr. of Altamonte Springs, Florida and Glen of Clare; one daughter Mrs. Robert (Verna Lu) Moran of Maitland, Florida; one brother Cecil of Athens, one sister, Mrs. Earl Rugg of Vickenburg, Arizona; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral service were held Saturday, July 31, 1971 at 1 p.m. at the Schwartz-Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska with the Rev. Geary Bird of St. Paul's Lutheran Church officiating. "Mrs. Maxine E. Ryckman, 75, of Mancelona, died Mon., June 19, 1995 at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. Mrs. Ryckman had been a life-long resident of Kalkaska County. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, and enjoyed writing poetry and short stories. She was active in community service, and enjoyed camping and other family activities. Born on Sept. 30, 1919, in Kalkaska County, she was the daughter of Edward D. and Lulu Belle VanBuren Rugg. On Aug. 20, 1939, in Kalkaska she was united in marriage to Willard A. Ryckman, who survives. Also surviving are four sons, Willard A. (Rebecca) Ryckman, Jr. of Tampa, Fla., James E. (Patricia) Ryckman of Charleston, SC, Ronald W. (Mary) Ryckman of Meade, Kan. and Douglas L. (Martha) Ryckman of Houghton Lake; one daughter, Mary Sue (Olli) Wendelin of Charleston, SC; nine grandchildren, Shannon, Jefferson, Paula, Ron, Heather, Daniel, Jennifer, Ashley and Cassandra; and six great grandchildren, Jefferson, Michael, Patrick, Rebecca, Alexa and Corinne. She was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thurs., June 22, 1995, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kalkaska. Rev. Ted Turanski officiated.
