From notes of Lelia Faith Canniff: He was Five feet 8 inches tall; Celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Lived in Indiana until March 1901, moving to Pomona, Cleon Township, Manistee Co. Soon rented the Sears farm across from C. B. Canniff farm, the two families moved north together, Grove family to Clearwater Township, Kalkaska County in March 1904; The Canniffs to Antrim County. But Mr & Mrs. Grove lived on same 40 acre farm, where he died, after a long illness of kidney trouble and was buried in Traverse City Cemetery. All six children were at funeral. When his parents moved from OH to IN, Gilbert often wondered off from Wagon into the woods and got lost. (From grandson Isaac Grove)

The Kalkaskian, Kalkaska, MI, 27 May 1926:
"Gilbert H. Grove, for twenty-two years a resident of Clearwater township, died at his home Tuesday evening, May 25, at the age of 75 years and 25 days. He was born in Ohio April 30, 1851, moving at an early age to Fulton county, Indiana. He was married to Clara M. Batz June 10, 1872 [date in newspaper]. To this Union were born seven children, Horton dying in infancy. In 1901 the family moved to Manistee county, Michigan and in 1904 moved to their present home in Clearwater township. Left to mourn his departure are the wife and six children: Edwin of Rapid City; Frank of Hammond, Ind; Pearl of Gary Ind; Inez of Detroit; Guy of East Lansing; Earl of Traverse City; besides sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren, hosts of friends and neighbors. The remains were laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery at Traverse City. Funeral services were held at his home Friday at 11 o'clock by Rev. McGinness. L. M. Clapp had charge."

From the notes of Lelia Faith Canniff: After Gilbert H. Grove death, Clara Grove lived with children several years then returned to her farm for the rest of her long and useful life. She was always busy, no time to rest. Clara M. Grove kept going except when she had sick spells until two weeks before her passing. Age, Influenza then pneumonia took her away at 6:30 P.M. Mon on her son Frank's 72nd birthday. Her funeral was on Thursday Jan. 15th 1948 at Hibbards Chapel. A Baptist minister (her church belief) officiated, burial in Traverse City also. Was loved by all. Guy was teaching in University of Puerto Rico at her death, and as Pearl had died before there were four of her children present, also 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren besides 2 daughters in law and 6 grandchildren in law. She left, 5 children, 14 grand children, 41 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren and a sister.

The Leader and Kalkaskian, Kalkaska, MI 15 Jan 1948, Thursday:
"Mrs. Clara M. Grove, 93, died at her farm in Clearwater township, Monday evening following a two weeks' illness. Clara Batz was born March 3, 1854 in Pennsylvania. She was united in marriage to Gilbert Grove June 8, 1872, at Rochester, Ind. In 1901 the family came to Michigan and settled in the Copemish community. Forty-four years ago they purchased a farm in Clearwater township, Kalkaska county, where she has since resided. Mr. Grove preceded her in death on May 25, 1926. Surviving are four sons and there daughters. Orange and Frank of Alden. Earl of Williamsburg, and Guy of Puerto Rico, and Mrs. Inez Bowman of Muskegon. A son and daughter preceded her in death. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren, and a sister Mrs. Lizzie Tomas of Marion, Ind. Services were held Thursday afternoon at Traverse City with Rev. George Wolcock of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery at Traverse City."

"Death Takes Orange Grove of Rapid City. Orange Edwin Grove, 92, of Clearwater Township, Kalkaska County, passed away at the Kalkaska Health Center on Jun 6, 1965. Mr. Grove was born April 3, 1873 in Fulton County, Indian, to Gilbert and Clara Grove, both of whom have preceded him in death. He was married to Lelia Faith Grove on July 20, 1902. He move to Rapid City in August of 1902 and lived 61 years on a 40 acre farm in Clearwater Township, Kalkaska County, and was School District Treasurer for many years, and also on Township Board for many years. Surviving with his wife, Lelia, are 5 daughters, Mrs. Grace Zimmerman, Route 2, Rapid City, Mrs. Olive Kinnison of Route 1, Alden, Mrs. Clarice Strang of Traverse City, Mrs. Mildred Zimmer of Route 1, Bellaire, and Mrs. Alice Anderson of Alden; 2 sons, Issac Ernest Grove of Monroe, and Fred Ward Grove of Route 1, Alden; 3 brothers, Frank of Alden, Earl of Williamsburg, Vernon of East Lansing; 1 sister, Mrs. Inez Bowman of Rapid City; 33 grandchildren; and 47 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held June 9, 1965, at 2 p.m. at the Schwartz Funeral Home with Mike Steere officiating, Burial was made in the Alden Cemetery."

He was a Farmer.

The daughter of Chancy and Lemira Canniff, she was born in Manistee County on July 20, 1881. On July 20, 1903 she married Orange Edwin Grove in Manistee County and after their marriage they moved to a farm in Clearwater Township, Kalkaska County where they raised their family of five daughters and two sons. Mrs. Grove was preceded in death by her husband on June 6, 1965; three infant daughters; two grandchildren and a brother. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Ben (Grace) Zimmerman, Mrs. Olive Kinnison and Mrs. Alice F. Anderson, all of Alden, Mrs. Bernard (Clarice) Strang of Traverse City, Mrs. Edward (Mildred) Zimmer of Bellaire; two sons, Isaac E. Grove and Ward Fred Grove, both of Alden; 33 grandchildren; 74 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 18, 1975 from the Rapid City Church of Christ with Larry Beaverson officiating. Burial was in Helena Township Cemetery, Alden."

"Frank Grove, 96, of Alden, died Wednesday, October 25, 1972 at his residence after a short illness. He is survived by a brother Earl of Traverse City; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Faith Grove of Rapid City and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva, August 21, 1930. Mr. Grove was born January 12, 1876 in Kalkaska county to Gilbert and Clara Bats Grove. He was been a Rapid City and Alden area resident for the past 40 years. Mr. Grove previously lived in Hammond, Indiana where he operated a restaurant and drug store.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 28, 1972 from the Schwartz Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska with the Rev. David Quider officiating. Interment was made in Oakwood cemetery, Traverse City."

Frank married Eva Peterson on 3 Mar 1904. Eva Peterson died on 21 Aug 1930.

"Former Kalkaskian Passes Away. Dr. Vernon G. Grove of 438 Rosewood, East Lansing, passed away Monday, January 23, 1967. Dr. Grove was 76 years of age, born Dec. 15, 1890 in Rochester, Indiana, and was a resident of Kalkaska county from about 1900 to 1920. He was a professor emeritus at Michigan State University, and retired in 1968. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth; 1 son, Wendell of Flint; 2 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Frank of Alden and Earl of Williamsburg; 1 sister, Mrs. Inez Bowman of Kalkaska. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 25, 1967 at 1 p.m. form Gorsline Runciman East Chapel, East Lansing. The body was then brought to Kalkaska to Schwartz Funeral home, where funeral services will be held today, January 26, 1967 at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Oakwood in Traverse City."

Richard Robert Moran had Vernon's math papers from the early 1900's. But they were accidently thrown away during a house move in the late 1970's.

Vernon married Elizabeth Ruttan on 23 Sep 1919.
