Betty Smith, daughter of Velma Markley Dean Collum and the late Joe Dean, was born in Lovington, N.M., on Jan. 11, 1931, and died at the Puxico Nursing Center in Puxico on Monday, April 18, 2005, at the age of 74. She had been a resident of the Puxico area for more than 50 years. She and her husband owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Puxico for 13 years. She was a member of the Sebring Church of the Nazarene in Sebring, Fla. and a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Poplar Bluff at the time of her death. On May 26, 1948, she was married to D. E. "Gene" Smith in Piggott, Ark. He preceded her in death on March 11, 1990. She was also preceded in death by one son, Alan Smith; a sister, Joan Dean; and one infant granddaughter. She is survived by two sons, Mark Smith of Puxico and James "Red" Smith of Waitsburg, Wash.; two daughters, Jill Reasons of Warrenton and Janice Henington of Summertown, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; her mother, Velma Collum of Puxico; and one brother, Charles Collum of Midland, Texas. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2005, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2005, in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel of Puxico with Emmett Garrison of Sebring, Fla., officiating and Greg Gilberto of Poplar Bluff assisting. Internment will follow in the Puxico Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Puxico in charge of arrangements.
