3.  PETER2 PURYEAR (SAMUEL1) was born in Warwick County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1768 in Henrico County, Virginia.  He married SUSANNAH MAJOR in Warwick County, Virginia, daughter of NICHOLAS MAJOR and MARY.  She was born in Warwick County, Virginia, and died 1801 in Henrico County, Virginia.

Notes for PETER PURYEAR:

From the book, Ancestors and Descendants of Jesse Puryear and Jane Holman, by Russell K. Puryear and Mary Jeter Puryear, " Peter Puryear, listed as the third son of Samuel Puryear and Elizabeth____, was found first in Warwick County, VA., although he may have been the oldest - born as early as 1715 perhaps. Marriage record (for him) has not been found but probably was in Warwick County. They were in Henrico County, VA in 1747 when Peter was appointed Processional of Lands for the 2nd District at that time. Some of the other brothers served in that capacity for some of the other precincts. Peter and Susanna reared their family in Henrico and although Peter acquired a great deal of land in Lunenburg County, VA, they did not move to it. One genealogist, writing in the Virginia Magazine of History and Genealogy, has advanced the theory that Peter Puryear's wife, Susannah was the daughter of Nicholas Major of Lunenburg County, VA, basing his decision on the record of a patent of August 20, 1760, to Peter Puryear of Henrico County for 270 acres in Lunenburg County. (Patent Book 34-670-671) Peter Puryear died while still a relatively young man, ca. 1748, leaving the widow Susannah and nine children. He left a will in Henrico County, VA., evidently one of those "destroyed by the enemy" and not re-recorded. In WILL BOOK 1 - page 96& 99, Sept. 14, 1783, recording the division of the slaves, "according to his will and her thirds." We find the widow and orphans named with the number of slaves each received. Of the 24, Susannah was allotted eight. To the children:

III. 1- Mary, 1 slave

      2- Martha, 2 slaves

      3- Peter, 2 slaves

      4- Reuben, 2 slaves

      5- Jesse, 1 slave

      6- John, 2 slaves

      7- Obadiah, 2 slaves

      8- Elizabeth, 2 slaves

9- William, orphaned son of William deceased, 2 slaves

No doubt, Peter Puryear has specified in his will that the land and slaves were to be held together until the youngest heir reached a certain age, in this way guaranteeing the support of the family. The widow, Susannah Puryear, never re-married, although she lived nearly 40 years after her husband died. Her estate was appraised 28 November, 1801, WILL BOOK 3-82 &83. Their son, Jesse was administrator. Then on 6 January, 1802, additional division of Peter Puryear's estate was made - "the part lent to Susannah for Life." Those participating in this later division were: John Puryear, Jesse Puryear, the legatees of Samuel Price, deceased (He had married the daughter, Elizabeth); legatees of the deceased son, William Puryear; Obadiah Puryear; Daniel Burton (husband of Mary Puryear) and Peter Puryear. WILL BOOK  2-639, Henrico County, VA. The son Reuben Puryear had died unmarried between 1783 (when he received his share of the slaves) and 1794 when one legatee sold to another "the part of Reuben Puryear's estate I have claim to."

Notes for WILLIAM PURYEAR:

After their marriage in 1785, William and Rebecca probably moved around 1794 with their family of small children to the Athens, Georgia area. On June 20, 1794, Henry Charlton sold 1,000 acres of land to William Puryear and Susannah Cox in the County of Franklin, just south of Athens, GA. called the Dogwood Grove tract. Circumstances did not allow William Puryear to enjoy the use of this land very long. Some time before tax-paying time in 1796, William had been murdered on his plantation by his own slaves. The site of this plantation was 5 miles below Athens, GA, but after the murder of her husband, Rebecca moved to the settled community of what was to become the city of Athens and for a time lived on the lot of the present City Hall.

Notes for JOHN PURYEAR:

The names of John and Reuben are not definitely remembered years later by a nephew who knew the account as a small child. Samuel and these two teen-aged brothers were rounding up stock one day and did not get in until after the evening meal was over. That night these two brothers died and Samuel was very ill - all from the food poisoning thought to have been rat poisoning put into the biscuits by disgruntled cook who had to cook a second supper that day just for the boys. Sam was tired and not very hungry, and ate very little and he survived.

Possible named John, died in poisoning as child

vi.    JANE C PURYEAR, m. WILLIAM KIDD, 15 October 1838, Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

Notes for JANE C PURYEAR:

So far, no family records for them has been located. They lived in Chester County, SC in the fall of 1871 when her father, John Alexander Puryear died. Jane and her brother, Samuel Washington Puryear of Limestone County, AL were in Oxford, Granville County, NC in early November, 1871 and each gave Power-of-Attorney to William A. Philpot, an attorney and County official, to represent them in the settling of the estate of their father who had died suddenly from a fall of a high perch. John A. Puryear was then 96. The son, Grandison F. Puryear witnessed those Powers of Attorney.  All records of that estate case, from which we might have learned much about the heirs and locations, have become lost or destroyed, along with all the other records of the same nature in Granville County, NC for a period of about 20 years including that date. No records could be found in Mecklenburg County, VA. - Grace Hollis Puryear book (GHP)

18.  MARY4 PURYEAR (SEYMOUR3, JOHN2, SAMUEL1) was born 29 June 1781 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and died 31 January 1855 in Randolph County, Missouri.  She married ANDERSON ROSE 09 July 1804 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

Notes for MARY PURYEAR:

Seymour Puryear (son of John Puryear, Sr. & Martha Norment) in his will of 15 Feb., 1788, called this daughter Polly, a nickname for Mary, and she appears as Polly Puryear on the marriage bond, but as Mary in most other records. As mentioned previously, there is a variance in birthdates recorded for her. Entered in a bible by a grand-daughter, was the year 1778 as her birth year, but the inscription on her tombstone says June 29, 1781. (Eldad Church Cemetery, Randolph County, Missouri) Mary died January 31, 1855, in Randolph County, Missouri where the census shows 1778 as the correct birth date. In the Mecklenburg County, Virginia marriage records, it shows Anderson Rose and Polly Puryear with a marriage bond on July 9, 1804 with Valentine McCutcheon as the Surety. If she was born in 1778, Mary then married at age 26, but if born in 1781, she was 23. Anderson Rose may have been the son of Captain Howell Rose of Mecklenburg County, VA and Granville County, NC who often served as appraiser and administrator of estates, particularly of Granville County, NC in 1800. The basis for this belief that he was the father of Anderson Rose is that Anderson and Mary named their first son Howell Seymour Rose - perhaps for their fathers. Their early home seems to have been in Caswell County, NC but later in Person County, NC where Anderson died in 1814.

19.  JOHN4 PURYEAR (JOHN3, JOHN2, SAMUEL1) was born Bet. 1772 - 1773 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and died 1809 in Stokes County, North Carolina.  He married SALLY SHEPHERD CLAUSAL 24 October 1799 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

Notes for JOHN PURYEAR:

John Puryear and his wife, Sallie Shepherd Clausal, (both of whom were from Huguenot families, against the Calvinist heritage, who had intermarried for generations in Virginia -- Puryear’s, Clausal’s, Shephard’s, Rose’s) married in Mecklenburg County, VA and they moved, before 1810, settling near Brookstown, North Carolina. Brookstown was a community on the east bank of the Yadkin River, north of Shallow Ford by several

miles. Brooks had an early ferry across the Yadkin River, and the roads leading to it from the west and west sides were called the Brookstown Road and the Brooks Ferry Road, respectively. A deed of Stokes County shows that the Puryear’s owned land along the Little Yadkin Creek, which is several miles north of what is today known as Brookstown, even north of the Poindexter settlement at Donahue. Perhaps all of this section was known as Brookstown. John Puryear died soon after arriving to the Yadkin Valley area and his widow, Sally, married, in 1812, Francis Rose, from a well-known Piedmont Virginia family.

27.  WILLIAM5 PURYEAR (JOHN ALEXANDER4, SEYMOUR3, JOHN2, SAMUEL1) was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and died in Hays County, Texas.  He married MARY E PITTS 04 October 1838 in Franklin County, Tennessee.

Notes for WILLIAM PURYEAR:

William Puryear, another of the sons of John & Martha, became restless on the plantation in Mecklenburg County, VA as had his older brother, Samuel Washington Puryear who left for Tennessee in 1833, after moving to Alabama. A little later - about 1835 perhaps - William also answered the "call of the West." After a time, his family in Virginia lost race of his whereabouts. On October 4, 1838, in Franklin County, Tennessee, a marriage was performed by A. L. Hyder, Justice of the Peace, uniting one William Puryear and Mary E. Pitt. Circumstantial evidence ( as set forth later) has convinced this historian that this is the William Puryear who could not be located when the estate of his father, John Alexander Puryear (deceased Oct., 1871) was being divided up and William's part of the land - 100 acres - was finally sold for taxes. The William Puryear and wife, Mary E. Pitt of this account had been deceased nearly 20 years at that time and their children would have had no knowledge of such an inheritance. In 1835, left the plantation in Virginia to move to Tennessee

Notes for SAMUEL WASHINGTON PURYEAR:

Samuel Washington Puryear was born and grew to manhood on a large tobacco plantation in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. He did not believe in the principle of slavery but as soon as he was old enough, he was put into the fields as overseer and he made a good one. When about 21 or 22, he joined a group "going West" and in the county of Roane, Tennessee, on Feb. 7, 1833 he married his first wife, Susan O. Hudson, who was also from Virginia. After a year in Tennessee, they moved to Limestone County, AL, there (9miles west of Athens) near Elk River and 12 miles from the Tennessee River, was the land they bought about 1856 and where Sam and his third wife plus the child lived out the rest of their lives. Sam and Susan had 7 children, two of whom died as infants. - (GHP book)

In 1833, left the plantation in Virginia

Notes for SUSAN O HUDSON:

Susan O. Hudson, a Mecklenburg County, VA girl who, with her widowed mother had accompanied the migrating Virginians to this newer part of the country, Roane County, Tennessee, where she met Samuel Washington Puryear and married. Scarlet fever claimed two of their babies, perhaps the first two. By 1935-6, when Alexander green Puryear, their first child to live, was born, this little family was already established in Limestone County, Alabama; the exact location now is not known, but probably not very far from the 160 acres near Elk River and 12 miles from the Tennessee River, which Sam bought and moved

to about 1856. This was 9 miles west of Athens, the County seat.

Notes for NANCY MELVINA MCCORMACK:

Nancy McCormack Puryear was an attractive person with a broad, Irish face, set in a frame of coal black hair, parted in the middle and smoothed down in two shining raven wings, ending in a knot on the nape of her neck. Her outstanding characteristics were her sunny disposition and her piercing black eyes that could flash fire upon occasion and told of the iron that underlay her calm and genial exterior. She took on the responsibilities of this ready-made family with vigor and then a year later, on her own birthday, January 9, 1852; a baby boy was born to them - Milton Carroll David Puryear. We see at a glance that he was named after Nancy's youngest brothers, then 15 and 12.

Alabama had been free from invasion during the first year of the War between the States, but in February, 1862, Fort Henry on the Tennessee River fell on the same day four gun-boats sailed up the river to Florence. In April, Athens, the nearest town to the Puryear homestead, and other towns of the Tennessee Valley were occupied by the Northern troops. Athens at this time was a wealthy town, intensely Southern in feeling, was ransacked by Federal troops under Col. Turchinoff, a Russian, who allowed his soldiers to commit the most horrible atrocities, including sacking and burning, after the old European fashion.

The northern, mountainous counties of Alabama (including Limestone) were known as "white counties" because very few of the inhabitants were slave holders. Their interests were different from those of middle and southern Alabama, but their sufferings and deprivations were much greater because for three years their country was ravaged by contending armies, each side burning and destroying from military necessity as well as malice. Fleming in his "Civil War and Reconstruction in Alabama," says "after two

years of warfare, the Valley of the Tennessee was absolutely destitute. Athens and smaller towns were sacked and burned, but the worst destruction was in the country by raiding parties of Federals and 'Tories' or bushwhackers dressed as Union soldiers. Huntsville, Florence, Decatur, Athens, Guntersville and Courtland all suffered depredations, robbery, murder, arson and rapine... In the counties of Lauderdale, Franklin, Morgan, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison and Jackson nearly all property was destroyed... all throughout this section fences were gone, fields grew up in weeds, residences were destroyed, farm stock had disappeared."

Sam and Nancy Puryear were fortunate in that their home was not burned; their loss and deprivation was great, but the comparative mildness of it is probably accounted for by the fact that Sam Puryear's dislike for the principles of slavery was generally known and had been for years. During the war and for a long time after, obtaining shoes was a problem in this part of the country. Sam Puryear and his sons always saved all the hides of stock killed on the place and tanned them. Twice a year, the shoe-maker came to make shoes for the large family; a little house in the corner of the yard was his abode during the month or more of his bi-annual visit. The children looked forward to the coming of the cobbler and their new, squeaky shoes. Nancy always had a large flock of ducks and geese on the waters of the nearby branch and the feathers from their plucking assured plenty of fat pillows and feather beds.

The McCormack boys - Nancy Puryear's brothers - were all in the Confederate Army, as were all the young and even middle aged men of the county, but the oldest, Jim took the measles and exposure to severe weather in his weakened condition, left him a prey to tuberculosis from which he later died. The mother, Mary Cowan McCormack died about 1865 and Jim and Mary not long afterward. For awhile, Charles W. McCormack, the father, then in bad health, went to live with his son Albert, but after a few months, Sam and Nancy Puryear brought him to their home where he lived out the rest of his life, dying in 1873. He was a man of large frame and in his later life very heavy, who suffered greatly from a "white swelling" - possibly inflammatory rheumatism which was aggravated by cold weather. Billie (William Jackson Buchanan Puryear), then about 8 to 10 years old, was given the responsibility of sleeping with his grandfather McCormack, so that he could render any service needed. One of his chief duties at night during the winter months was to keep a good fire burning all night in the big fireplace and to keep plenty of wood on hand to replenish it. It was a comfort that Charles McCormack needed and appreciated.

About the time of the death of Nancy's mother, Sam's own mother died in Virginia. Sam was ill and could not go at the time, but he did go when his father died in 1871 - that is, after his death, for he died suddenly. John A. Puryear died from a head wound received in a fall from a high porch. (GHP book)
