Estes was always known as "Poppy" to his children and grand-children. Since Poppy died way before my time...I really never knew anything about him except that he is buried in Keener Cemetery in Sylva, NC near many other Parris relatives and ancestors...and I know about Poppy's leg. A strange story to some...but just part of our history to us...
Poppy had his right leg cut off when he was still a young man. His daughter Mary (my grandma "Mer") could only remember him with one leg. If memory serves the family well, it was a logging accident that took his leg.
The interesting part is that there is a small grave to the right side of Poppy's grave. This grave is marked only with old stones and
resembles the grave of a small child...this is where Poppy's leg was buried...long before his death. We are unsure where or when the picture above was taken but Mer knew that he was already missing his leg at this time. Click here to see a photo of the gravesite.
"Poppy" or Estes Jarrett Parris was born to Issac David Parris (known as Dave) and Mary Davis of the Barker's Creek community in 1880. The family can be found in the census in 1880 listed as I.D. and Mary Parris...by the time the 1900
census was taken Dave was widowed. Dave was the son of Andrew Jackson Parris. They are all buried in Keener
Cemetery, Sylva, NC among many other Parris ancestors.
"Mommie" or Alice Parker married Estes in
Jackson County, NC. She was the daughter of James and Rebecca Bumgarner Parker. James and Rebecca can also be found in the 1880 census in Barker's Creek Community and coincidentally Rebecca was widowed by 1900 also. James was buried in Campground Cemetery near Cherokee and Rebecca was buried in Locust Field Cemetery, also in Jackson County.
