Sadie (Christy) Mowrer, my grandmother, was the only child of David and Harriet (Mackey) Christy.  Her father David Christy was one of the six children of Peter and Margaret (Hardy) Christy.  Peter Christy was the son of George and Nancy Christy, who came to Wayne County, Ohio with their family ca. 1830.  They settled in Chester Twp., where Peter and his brother Robert Christy were prominent farmers in the mid-19th century.  Much of the land that Peter Christy and his sons owned in the 1800s remains in the family today.

The Christy Surname

The CHRISTY (or CHRISTIE) family is a sept of the Clan Farquharson, which traces its roots back to medieval Scotland.  My Finley and Hardy ancestors also belong to this clan.  The Christy name itself is a Scottish diminutive form of the English and French name CHRISTIAN, which itself derives from the given name Christian (L. My most pressing Christy research goals are finding records of my 3rd great-grandfather George Christy's family in Pennsylvania and determining exactly when the family came to Wayne County, Ohio.  Census evidence suggests that the parents of Peter Christy, my 2nd great-grandfather, were born in Ireland.  If this is true, then George and Nancy Christy would be my immigrant ancestors, arriving in PA sometime in the late 1700s.  Peter Christy's obituary identifies Fayette Co., PA as his place of birth in 1810 and states that he moved to Ohio with his family at the age of 12 (ca. 1822).  George Christy appears with family members of the correct ages in the Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co. census in 1810 and 1820.  He is absent from the 1830 census there, but a John Christy appears that year in the Chester Twp., Wayne Co., OH census, again with family members of ages and numbers corresponding to those of my ancestors.  John Christy also disappears from the census records in 1840 and Nancy Christy (George Christy's widow) is listed as a head of household.  This has led me to believe that this "John" Christy is actually my 3rd great-grandfather George.

George Christy died in 1835, shortly after coming to Wayne Co.  He is listed on the family monument in Wooster Cemetery along with his children, but his body must have been moved there at a later date if this is the true location of his burial.  Wooster (originally Oak Hill) cemetery did not exist until 1853.  Another research task is determining the exact relationship of all the Christys buried in this family plot and elsewhere in Wooster Cemetery.
