The VILLAGE of MOZHARY

The village of Mozhary ( Mozary, Mozhari) is situated on the way from Ovruch (Owrucz) to Slovechno (25 km west of Ovruch, and 4 km east of Slovechno). Since the end of 18th century (or beginning of 19th century) the village belongs to the County of Ovruch (Ovruchskiy uyezd). Until the October revolution it belonged to the Region of Kiev (Kievskaya Gubernyia). Recently it belongs to the Region of Zhitomir (Zhitomirskaya Oblast).

However, it seems that before the 2nd partition of Poland (1793) this village, and the nearby town of Slovechno belonged to the County of Mozyr of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

According to the chronicle of Mozhary written by the school librarian just after the World War II, the village was established in 14th century. However, it seems that this village called earlier Mozharichi was firstly mentioned in 1436 as a donation for the prince Ivan (Alexander) Andreievich Mozhayski from the king of Poland Vladislav the 3rd(Warnenczyk).

In this file I will be presenting some historical documents associated with Mozhary, and to some extent also with neighbouring villages. These will be illustrated with photos showing the present and past of this village.

A recent documentation of Mozhary (2008) including, however, some elder photos, was given by Irina Bielecka, who is a granddaughter of Eva Mozharovska (see the photos directly at http://foto.rambler.ru/users/sunnyira1/2/ ).
