The 1870 Negotiations between the Senate Wing and the Savage Wing
In August of 1870 in Cincinnati, Ohio the Senate Wing of the Fenian Brotherhood and a group, the Irish National Brotherhood, probably the Clan Na Gael, held an Irish National Congress attempting to unite the two Fenian factions. The Congress called its new organization consisting of the Irish National Brotherhood, several breakaway Circles of the Savage Wing and the Senate Wing in total, except for General John O'Neill's small Senate breakaway group called the United Fenian Brotherhood. The negotiations went on for several days and came to naught when the Savage Wing would not accede to the demand of the Cincinnati Senate men that no man who had held an important position in any faction could be on the ruling council proposed for the unified directory. The Irish American Senate Wing newspaper in New York printed the entire process of proposals and responses which makes for fascinating reading for Fenian historians.

The Sections I am presenting below of Savage's Fenian Heroes and Martyrs were done with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software from an old dissembled copy. This software exhibits varying degrees of errors (85-95% accurate in most cases) depending on what is scanned and read by the software (in my case, I use OmniPro 15) so caution must be used when quoting or copying what I have done for historical research purposes, since there may be typos or incorrect words.
Although I do perform checks to see if everything appears correct, it is probable there are some errors. If such are found I would be happy to correct them just notify me at mpruddy@gmail.com. Scholars should refer to the original text of the book or contact me and I will verify accuracy of the OCR text.
