Welcome to my web site!

This site features stories of, and surrounding the emigration of my ancestors, from their 'old countries' to New Zealand during the 19th century.  These, and other 19th and 20th century settler's are referred to in Maori as, "te tauiwi" - the later immigrants, the first being the Polynesian ancestors of the Maori, who had been living in New Zealand for several centuries.  These earlier Polynesian settlers are in contrast referred to as, "te tangata whenua" - the people already here.

So, come visit this 'new land' with my 'tauiwi' by selecting a family or narrative below:

To experience the hardships these hardy soles left behind - and came to - explore a collection of stories and extracts applicable to the period, vocation and/or placement of my immigrant settler(s):

An excellent portrayal from the publication, "The Immigrants", by Tony Simpson.

An excellent portrayal from the publication, "The Immigrants", by Tony Simpson.

This extract is copied from a paper complied by Paul MELODY and completed in October 1995.  The document is headed, “The House of SIGNAL, a History of Robert SIGNAL, Founder of Marton, and his Descendants” – Robert SIGNAL is my Second Great Grandfather.

The founding of the 'eight-hour working day, credited to my 3rd Great 'Step' Grandfather, Samuel Duncan PARNELL, second husband of (Sarah) Sophia BRUNGER, nee PILE - An extract from the publication, "The Immigrants", by Tony Simpson.

Stories depicting the men and women who 'tamed' the West Coast.

This extract is from a  journal commenced by Robert Jearrad STEPHENSON, the third son of George and Ellen who took over the Paringa property in South Westland on the untimely death of my Great Grandfather, Thomas Samuel WARD.

Gold fever in Otago and on the West Coast during the 1860's onwards.  This narrative is largely attributable to the works by June A Wood in "Gold Trails Of Otago", Tony Simpson in "The Immigrants", and Edmund Bohan in "New Zealand, The Story So Far - A Short History".

An extract from the publication, "Kapua – The Years Between", being a history of the Kapua Settlement (incorporating the farm worked by my Great Grandparents, James & Jessie TAVENDALE), 1894-1994 and the Arno District; by Jean G Stace.

An extract from the publication, "The Story of New Zealand", by Judith Bassett, Keith Sinclair and Marcia Stenson.

A collection of 'thumbnail' texts  and accompanying sketchs illustrating the working lives of New Zealand's pioneers around the turn of the 20th century.  Extracts from the publication, "The Colourful Colony - Pioneering Life in New Zealand", by James Sanders.
