Mike, according to our early history books of Iowa County the Nelson Cemetery was the site of the earliest burials in Hilton Township. It is noted in the 1881 History that it contained about 40 burials at that time. The 1874 Atlas shows the cemetery on the R. Nelson farm, the 1915 Atlas shows it on the Susan Nelson farm. The 1915 History notes it being the first cemetery in Hilton township on timberline and was founded by Richard Nelson, Nels Nelson, Levi Nelson, Christ Engelbert and others about 1860. Pauline Lillie copied the stones in September of 1959 . It was overgrown with blackberries, as well as some time previous having been burnt off. Much undergrowth. In 1974 Mr. L. A. Winborn and friends removed brush, attempted to restore the area and recopied and checked stones trying to locate others. In the fall of 1980 the remains of those buried in the Old Nelson Cemetery on the now Martinson farm were moved to the cemetery of the First Lutheran Church of Conroy in Hilton Township. Here is the listing of names from Pauline Lillie's Cemetery book. The book is no longer available.

Richard's headstone was from Norway.
Richard and Anna Oldsdatter were married soon after they arrived in the USA. They appear in the Federal census in 1850, La Salle County, Illinois. Reier (Richard) Nelson also used the name Egeboe when he immigrated so apparently he was living on the Egeboe farm before he left Norway. Richard and Susan are recorded in the Federal census 1870, Hilton Township, Iowa County, Iowa. No children are recorded from either marriage. Settlement of estate for Reier (Richard) June 1894, Hilton Township, Iowa County, Marengo, Iowa.

Notes for VALLENTIN FULTIN NELSON:
Vallentin moved from Hjelmeland to Rennesoy parish in 1847. He emigrated and arrived in New York on June 15, 1849 from Stavenger, Norway. He was 22 years old. His brother, Levin, was on the same ship. There were 74 passengers on the schooner "Ebenezer" captained by H.C. Claussen. Levin was passenger #45 and Valentin was #46. It so happens that not only did Nelson's and the Johnson's reside in the same area in Hjelmeland parish, Rogaland County, Norway but when they came to America, many settled in the same area near Marengo, Iowa County, Iowa.
(Records from: Microfilm roll #507 from the ALC. archives has records from Trinity Lutheran Church in Norway, Iowa and First Lutheran Church in Conroy, Iowa) These records are mainly of baptisms and confirmations. Names of the sponsors are given which include members from both branches and are recorded in Norsk. One item of interest was the confirmation on May 8, 1869. Note the names are recorded in the Norwegian manner. Fultin Nelson was the sponsor for his children by his first wife. It was stated they all attended Christian schools.

The headstone has three names on it, they are Valentin, his 2nd wife Christine b. 11 Feb. 1838 and their Daughter Nellie b. 1 Sept. 1880. Settlement of estate states he had five children by his first wife. Only three are named and they were born in Illinois, recorded in the Federal census of 1860, Hilton Township, Iowa County, Iowa.

Clarence was accidentally shot while hunting rabbits with two neighbor boys and brother Milton who had tagged along. While they were crossing through a fence the trigger on one of the guns caught on a wire and went off. He died an hour later.

At the age of 13 most girls have one thing on their minds, boys. Not me, the only boys that interested me were the ones that owned horses. I loved horses. I would follow my Dad from daylight to dark for one chance to take the reins in my hands. The glorious feeling of having a team at my command sustained me through the heat of haying and harvest time.
Bib overalls, sneakers, a long sleeved boy's shirt and a boy's cap were my favorite attire. I wore my hair in a boyish bob and secretly wished I had been a boy.
It was the first day of spring in 1933. Signs of new life were everywhere. The crocuses were in bloom, buds were straining to erupt on the trees and the ewes were giving birth.
Dad had been summoned to assist a neighbor with a sick cow. It was an opportunity for the two families to spend a social evening together. Their son, Alan, and I often rode our ponies down the country lanes or across the fields. This spring evening, Alan and I were seated on opposite sides of a large table, playing cards. A gasoline lamp, with it's blue-white light, hissed nearby. Suddenly, without warning, the lamp lifted from the table and struck the ceiling. A ball of fire discharged from each mantel. Alan slid under the table to safety, but I attempted to leave the room and was enveloped in flames. My hair and the sleeves of my shirt were burning when I stumbled and fell. Dad quickly picked up a scatter rug and smothered the blaze, but I had deep burns on my hands, arms, face and neck. A sleeveless wool sweater under my shirt apparently protected the upper part of my body while the overalls protected my legs. I had instinctively covered my eyes with one arm, protecting them also.
The treatment for burns, at that time, was tannic acid applied from a spray gun. No dressings were used. Besides being swollen and burned beyond recognition, I was black from the tannic acid. I could neither open my eyes nor my mouth. The doctors orders were to keep me as comfortable as possible and for this reason, no attempt was made to wash my burned hair. Instead a towel was used to cover it. The only way I could take food was through a glass tube forced between my swollen lips. No one at the hospital expected me to live, but there was never any doubt in my mind. I did not question the desire that I felt to survive, I simply believed and with faith and courage as my weapons I began a determined struggle for life.
Mother kept a constant vigil at my bedside during my ten day hospitalization. The Sisters, who operated the hospital, kept her busy mending linens in exchange for her room and board. It also kept her mind occupied.
As the news spread, friends and relatives came to the hospital to visit me. No one was prepared for what they saw. Some became physically ill from the smell of burned flesh and others fainted. Few were able to give any words of encouragement. Only Sister Mary Margaret came every day with her rosary in hand, and caressing the beads she chanted her prayers. At first, because I could not see, I thought she was crying. I said, "Sister, don't cry. God is not going to let me die!"
I had never been very enthusiastic about Sunday School. It was Mother who insisted we belong to a church. Dad had his own religion. He was aware of God's presence in everything around him, and practiced the golden rule throughout his life. I felt that if it was all right for Dad it was all right for me. Besides going to Sunday School meant wearing a dress! Now, here I was in a Catholic hospital where daily prayers, for me were being telegraphed to God.
I believe most of those who prayed were asking for my recovery, and their prayers were answered. But after I was home and the tendons had drawn my hands into tight claws; when webbing had grown from my earlobe to my chin and between my fingers; when the rotting flesh was healed at last; when the country doctor and Dad, working at home, had grafted skin from my legs to my arms by using two razor blades, one pressed on my leg to raise the flesh through the holes and the other to cut off tiny patches of skin, I was still not a pretty sight. An Aunt visiting from a distance expressed her feelings, in confidence, to my mother. "Why didn't God let her die? She will never know happiness, and will spend her life alone and lonely."
I spent three school terms at Gillette State Hospital for Crippled Children at St. Paul, MN., where I attended regular classes. The initial period of adjustment was tough. I had never been away from home and because of the distance, my parents could not visit regularly. As I became familiar with the other children, I realized I was fortunate indeed! My problem seemed minor in comparison.
When my baby brother was admitted to Gillette hospital, because of an injury at birth, I felt very privileged to be allowed to feed him his evening meal and to spend my free time entertaining and caring for him.
My free time was limited, however, as I underwent thirteen surgical procedures and daily therapy. Swimming was to be part of the therapy, but I had such a fear of the water that learning to swim was impossible. Finally after a near fatal drowning experience, I was excused to take piano lessons.
Summer months were spent, at home, on the farm. Since we didn't have a piano, Dad continued therapy with what we had available. He insisted I milk a cow morning and night to strengthen and exercise my fingers.
"After all", he said, "if you cannot completely close your hands, how do you expect to drive a team again?"
I sat by that patient cow faithfully twice a day. Every squeeze was torture, but surely and steadily the milk began to flow, along with the tears. Eventually I accomplished my goal. I was able to grip the reins and know again profound exhilaration as I commanded the team to proceed.
So the worst was over. I was home again attended High School. I was to return to Gillette Hospital for experimental plastic surgery following graduation. Then, without warning, Dad suffered a fatal heart attack. He had been a constant source of encouragement to me, and for the first time I felt alone and empty.
But God didn't allow me much time for self pity. I had been dating a neighbor boy and we were married in June, a few days before my eighteenth birthday. A year later, the first of our six children was born. By now I was so involved with my new found happiness that plastic surgery didn't fit into my schedule.
But I have never been to busy for God. He has been my constant companion through many lean financial years, miscarriages, and several major surgeries. He was my Pillar of Strength as I watched my husband deteriorate and die from bone cancer.
Now as I enjoy my grandchildren, my scars have faded but are still quit noticeable. Unlike other women my age, I will never have to worry about having wrinkles, that problem was eliminated a long time ago!
