Matilda McGough

.

Matilda McGough was the daughter of John McGough and Elizabeth Carson.  She was born on July 17, 1799 in Abbeville, South Carolina.

Matilda's parents owned land in Greene County, GA as early as 1795.  At times the family would have to flee from the Indians in the area, and would return to Abbeville.  On one of those occasions Matilda was born.

Matilda was of small stature, solidly built, with coal black hair and dark eyes.  She wore her hair parted in the middle, knotted at the back, and held together by a fancy high comb.

She was of plain speech, and never minced words, but her

conversation had a peculiar humor in it.  She often provoked laughter by her way of saying things.

On November 30, 1819, Matilda married Marshall Sharp in Greene County, GA

Just a few years after her  marriage, Matilda and family moved to Alabama, first living in Montgomery County and later in Tallapoosa County.

Matilda and Marshall went on to have 9 children together.  Some time prior to 1850, Marshall contracted pneumonia and died.  Matilda, with the help of her older children, held the family together.

About 1856 Matilda bundled up her family and her house- hold effects, and moved to Leake County, MS.  She settled at Good Hope.  Once the Civil War was over, she moved to Malco, in Scott County, which is where she died on Nov. 16, 1881.  She is buried in Good Hope Cemetery.
