My great grandfather, Wilhelm Bley, was born in Berlin and immigrated from Germany to New York around 1895. Wilhelm, a musician, made his living by playing the French horn at theaters in New York City. He married Bertha Martha Kaempffe, who also had immigrated from Germany. In 1911 he was on his way home from work at the Hammerstein's Victoria Roof Garden when he was accosted by some thugs who assaulted him so seriously that he died before a doctor could be called. This story was reported in the New York Herald Tribune on June 11, 1911. Wilhelm's daughter and my grandmother, Gertrude Rosalie Bley, was born on May 9, 1899 in New York City. Her wedding picture, circa 1920, showed her to be a beautiful bride. |
