I have traced my
Sharp line back to the late 1700's, in North Carolina.
After a short time in Georgia, the Sharps began moving to
Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas. My direct Sharp
line starts with Edward Sharp.
I have compiled a
short history
of my Sharps, starting with Edward Sharp in North Carolina,
and ending with my father's birth in Mississippi.
Many of my Sharps
lived in Alabama. At one point, around the mid 1850's,
there were so many Sharps living in an area about ten miles
south of Montgomery that the town was called Sharpsville, and a
map of that time period will show the Sharpsville post office.
In the area where Sharpsville used to be, there still exists the
Sharp family cemetery, where many ancestors are buried.
My great great great
grandfather, Marshall Sharp, received a government land
grant in Alabama in April of 1835.
My great great
grandfather, Lafayette Marshall Sharp, fought in the Civil War.
He served in the 47th Alabama Infantry, and was wounded in the
Battle of the Wilderness, which took place in Virginia.
His records show that he was admitted to C.S.A. General
Hospital, Charlottesville, Virginia, on May 9, 1864, and was
furloughted on May 25, 1864. I was able to obtain copies of his service
records from the National Archives. After the war,
Lafayette moved his family to Texas, and is buried in Oak
Hill Cemetery, Edgewood, Texas. Lafayette's first
wife, and my great great grandmother Caroline
"Callie" Brown died in 1861 and is buried in
Waverly, Chambers County, Alabama.
My great
grandfather, William
Lockhart Sharp, was Lafayette's oldest son. William
married Bettie Lang in 1880. Called
"Paw" by the family, Will raised his family in the old
Sharp family house, in Walnut Grove, Mississippi. The 1896
Census for Educable Children lists William with children
Callie, Mary, Alice, John and Finley (my grandfather).
When William died in 1948, he was buried in Damascus
Cemetery.
Robert Hilliard
Sharp, son of my grandfather William's brother, also served in
World War II. He was a pilot whose plane was shot down
over the English Channel. A monument
stands in front of the Leake County, Missisippi courthouse with
Robert's name on it.
My father enlisted
in the Navy during World War II. He served as an armed
guard on a series of naval and merchant vessels during the war.
Using copies of dad's service records, I was able to piece
together the story of his
war experiences.
My dad's oldest
brother, William Mack Sharp, also served in World War II. He
enlisted in the Army. Through a cousin, I obtained a
picture of Uncle
Mack in his Army uniform.
My dad, although
born in Mississippi, settled in New York after marrying my mom.
My sister Sharon
and I, born 3 1/2 years apart, were quite a pair. |
