My Coffin Roots
William James Coffin & Altha Cordelia (Waldo) Coffin, with
daughters
Velma, Jennie, and Ethel, Approx. 1909, around St. Paul, MN
These pages will be tracing the descendants of Edward Coffin,
who came to Herkimer County, New York shortly before 1790, then settled in Deerfield,
Oneida County, NY between 1800 and 1810. Many of his descendants stayed in the
Oneida/Herkimer county area, while others eventually drifted off to Saint
Lawrence County, the states of Illinois and Iowa, and elsewhere.
A Glimpse in Passing, published in 1991 by Steffen Publishing,
Holland Patent, New York, gives a history of Newport, New York during the period
1791-1991. It gives the following account of Edward Coffin:
EDWARD COFFIN (1741-1824) was born near Poughkeepsie and came to Newport before
1798. He married Sibyl--and located in town on the farm now occupied by
Everard Fenner. He cleared the land and built a house on the hill near the
place where the upper barn now is. He afterward removed to Deerfield,
where he died. To Edward and Sibyl were born a large family: Isaac,
who once owned the John Sherman place; Joseph, who lived on the road between the
stone school house and Brayton's Corners, Edward and Jacob, who lived in
Deerfield; John, who kept a "tavern" in Deerfield; Abram and Benjamin,
also Deerfield residents; Anna, who married Cady Howe, father of Manson Howe of
Poland; Mrs. Orrissa Eddy, who died recently at 90, was a daughter of John
Coffin; Mrs. Lucina Spencer is a daughter of Benjamin Coffin; Joseph Coffin,
Jr., was assessor in 1859 and his brother Edward was Justice of the Peace many
years. Edward's son, Isaac, is a physician residing at North lion, NY and
is now coroner of Herkimer County.
