Augustus was a Confederate in the Civil War. During his service he was shot in the left thigh at James Island, South Carolina on 16 Jul 1863. On 23 Mar 1865 at Averysboro, North Carolina he was shot in the left elbow. After the war, Augustus bought land in Jasper County, GA and owned and operated lumber mills in Alabama and Georgia. His sons worked for him.
In 1912, Augustus went to TX to visit relatives and suffered a fatal stroke while there. He was buried at Shiloh Cemetery in Comanche County, TX. The only marker on his grave is a concrete block carved with his initials.
