Part II - Cox Family

The earliest mention of the Cox name occurred in connection with the House of the Norman Conqueror. Among the families of France that followed King William was that of Le Coq, namely Walter de Chilworth. He reminded his friends of a rooster the way he fought in battle. This was subsequently changed to Le Cock, and later to Cokkys, and from that to the more familiar name of Cox. The name may be spelled Cox, or Coxe.

The Cox family has confusion of facts in many places. The reader should prove what he can.

John, with his wife Rachael and family, were said to have come from London to America in 1708, landing in New Castle, Delaware for a season. Records show one John Cox purchasing 250 acres there on June 8, 1705, so they may have arrived earlier than 1708. This may explain why the younger children were listed as being born in New Castle.

William Follow, born 3 Jun 1635, England, wife Sarah Follow. It is a supposition that William married his sister Sarah. This was not uncommon at the time. Data is from a letter by B. Fellow to John Hollowell dated 1 November 1988. There is a record of a William born 3 June 1635 and of a Robert born about 1665.

Robert Follow, (Fellow), son of William and Sarah, born about 1665 England, was a Quaker. His actor friends started calling him FELLOW because of his good nature. He assumed the name Robert after Robert of Normandy. One of the Shakespearean actors changed him from a nondescript boy into one of the crowd who wore silver buckled buckskins. Was he one of the first Quakers in the Fellow family, having been married in a Friends meeting house? He was married 19 Oct 1690, in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England, to Rachel Littleboy.
