                                Tombstone of Frances (Latham Dungan Clarke) Vaughn

Here is an image of the stone of Frances Latham Dungan Clarke Vaughn in Newport, RI. It reads "Mrs. Frances Vaughn, Died 1677". Its condition is evident and there is no reference to her esteemed position as "The Mother of Governors" or as the wife of either William Dungan or Jeremy Clarke.

As many of you already know, there has been a healthy discussion over the summer regarding the placement of a companion stone on her grave as a memorial. (The 325th anniversary of her death will be in September 2002)  I imagine her descendants living today number in the thousands so, hopefully, we will be successful in raising funds for this effort. I have already sought guidelines for approval from the cemetery and they are supportive.
