Notes

"Robert patented land in Orange Co. (that part which became Augusta Co. in 1738) on 6 September 1736. He brought his family to Virginia, on 28 February 1739 (Orange Co. order book 11, page 110). His will is found in Augusta County Will Book 5, page 17, dated 24 September 1772, proved 17 November 1772.

According to the records found and examined by Norris H. Turk, the Turk family was one of the earliest in that part of Virginia which became Augusta County in 1738. In that year, Augusta was set off from Orange County, but the records show the Turk name recorded in Orange County as early as 1736. Robert proved his and his family's importation, that is they paid their own way to the colony of Virginia - February 28, 1739, Orange County Order Book 11, page 110. "Robert Turk, Margaret, Jane, John, Ann, Thomas, James, William." (Tinkling Spring ,page 429.) The Orange County Order Book more fully states that "Robert Turk made oath that that he imported himself, Margaret, Jane, John, Ann, Thomas, James and William, from Ireland to Phily and thence unto this colony."

The Turk family was associated with the Tinkling Spring Church from the beginning. (Wilson, page 419.) We find baptisms by the Rev. John Craig for John Turk and Thomas Turk on page 482; John Turk, June 9, 1745; Robert, April 19, 1741; Thomas Turk, no date directly appear sunder his name; Jean, April 9, 1746. Dr. Wilson tells us that the Turks were large men.

The will of Robert Turk is found in Augusta Co., VA Will Book 5, page 17, dated September 24, 1772, proved November 17, 1772. Robert Turk left all his property to Thomas Turk, and one shilling to his son James Turk. The witnesses were Charles Teas, Thomas Turk, Jr., and Elizabeth Gleaves. Proved 13 Nov 1772 by Teas and Turk. Thomas Turk qualified with John Madison, Jr., John Hind. Chalkley, Lyman. CHRONICLES OF THE SCOTCH-IRISH SETTLEMENT IN VIRGINIA. Rosslyn, VA: The Commonwealth Printing Co., 1912. Will Book 5, page 17.

In Augusta Co., VA Court Judgement of November 1747, reveals the spirit of the day in forcing payment of subscriptions made for the support of Pastor and meeting house. Robert Turk pledged one pound per year, from 1741-1746, but for some reason he did not pay this pledge. The Pastor took him to court to force payment, which he finally paid. Chalkley, Lyman. CHRONICALES OF THE SCOTCH-IRISH SETTLEMENT IN VIRGINIA, Vol. 1. Rosslyne, VA: The Commonwealth Printing Co., 1912 .Page 297.

Samuel Gay and Robert Turk probably resided in Lancaster, PA, since on December 4, 1744, they gave their bond to James McCune of Salisbury township in that county. The Obligators of this bond removed to Augusta Co., VA prior to 1750.

On January 8, 1746, James Sharp was a resident of Chester Co., PA and Andrew McClure executed his bond to him on that date, which wa sassigned to Robert Turk on June 28, 1746, by James Sharp. (Virginia Historical Magazine, Vol. XXXI.)

When purchasing lands from William Beverley on South River below Waynesboro ,he required Beverley to post an 80 pound bond that the title to th eland was good. In the handling of his subscription to Tinkling Spring he was more than careful. His pledge of 1 pound per year to th esupport of Mr. Craig remained unpaid from 1741 through 1746. In 1747 the Tinkling Spring Commissioners took Mr. Turk into court and produced as evidence the agreement between the congregation and the commissioners to force the payment of Mr. Turk's subscription of 6 pounds."
