Notes

Aka: Mylles Cary
"It is well here to correct some statements made regarding the Cary family in "American Family Antiquities," by Wellesly, presenting some facts which can be substantiated by the records of Warwick Co., Va.

In September 1851, Mr. Eggleston found on a farm called "Bensalls," near Warwick Inn, then occupied by Mr. Lucas, a dilapidated tombstone in five fragments. Putting the pieces together, it was found to bear a coat-of-arms and the following inscription:

Here lyeth ye body of Miles Cary, Esq., Only son of John Cary and Alice his wife, Daughter of Henry Hobson of ye city of Bristol. Alderman, he was born in ye city and departed this life ye 10th day of June, 1667, about the forty-seventh year of his age, leaving four sons and three daughters (viz:) Thomas, Ann, Henry, Bridget, Elizabeth, Miles and William.

The will of "Myles Cary" (recorded in Book A, p. 448, June 21st, 1667) corroborates the statement of the epitaph. The coat-of-arms of the original colonist is represented on articles handed down from early days, with this motto: "Sine Deo Careo.""

"settled in Warwick County, Va., where he married Anne, daughter of Thomas Taylor, one of the earliest settlers. He lived on an estate known as "Magpy Swamps," obtained from his father-in-law, Capt. Taylor, which he devised to his son, Thomas Cary. He mentioned in his will two houses in England, presumably in Bristol, one in Baldwin Street the other in St. Nicholas Street-to be sold for the benefit of his daughters. He owned 2,000 acres of land, well stocked, and numerous slaves, a mill and a store. His children were born between 1645 and 1666."

Old Churches, Ministers, and Families of Virginia. Article XLI. "Miles Cary, the son of John Cary, of Bristol, England, came to Virginia in 1640, and settled in the county of Warwick, which, in 1659, he represented in the House of Burgesses. In 1667 he died, leaving four sons. His son Henry, father of Archibald, was appointed to superintend the building of the capitol at Williamsburg, (when the seat of government was removed from Jamestown;) also at a later period to superintend the rebuilding of the college, which had been burnt. He married a daughter of Richard Randolph, of Curles, and left five daughters, who married Thos. Mann Randolph, of Tuckahoe, Thos. Isham Randolph, of Dungeness, Archibald Bolling, Carter Page, of Cumberland, and Joseph Kincade."

Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume I. III--Colonial Councillors of State: son of John Cary, a merchant of Bristol, England, was born about 1620, and came to Virginia, it is believed, about 1645. He settled in Warwick county and lived at a place called "Magpie Swamp." His landed estate embraced about 2,000 acres, well stocked and having upon it numerous slaves, a store, mill etc. Cary was a collector of customs in March, 1658-59 and in 1663, and as "Col. Miles Cary," he was a member of the house of burgesses from Warwick county in March 1659-60. He was afterwards added to the council and was present at the meetings of that body June 21, 1665, and March 28 and July 10, 1666. He was doubtless still a councillor at the time of his death, June 11, 1667, when he is said to have been killed while defending the fort at Old Point against the Dutch. Lieut.-Col. Miles Cary married Anne, daughter of Thomas Taylor, a burgess from Warwick county. Many persons in Virginia and the south are descended from him.

"He was the lineal descendant of Henry Cary, Lord Hundson, and was, at the time of his death, the heir apparent of the barony."

Came to America about 1645, setteled on James River near Richmond (He was known as "The Virginia Immigrant").
