From: [email protected] "Huguenot Society of South Carolina,
published paper 1971 says "that research indicates that they
came from Province de Poitou, Viliedeu de Ouia (d'Onai), however
they indicate there was no such place. The paper also states
that Pierre Michaud, son of Jean and Catherine Michaud, from
Villedieu d'Aunis, Poitou, and his wife Sara Jaudon(Jodon),
daughter of Jacques and Elizabeth Bertonneau, from Isle de Re".
However, history tells us after the Edict of Nantes was revoked,
many protestant places of worship were destroyed, leaders of the
relegion groups murdered, so many families fled these particular
areas, sometimes in sufficient numbers that villages ceased to
exist. Henri De Navarre, ruler of the Country of Navarre, in
northern Spain, heir to the Throne of France From Henri III, was
a protestant and fought many wars against the Catholics in what
is now known as Europe. He defeated the Kings troops at Poitou,
held them prisoner, then released them advising the king that he
did this mercifully (see stories about Navarre and Poitou in
Britannica). One of the conditions that he remain as heir to the
throne was he must relinquish his Protestant Religion, of which
he agreed. A few days later King Henry III was murdered, and
Henri De Navarre became King Henri IV, and signed the Edict of
Nantes, allowing the people to worship in the location of their
choice.
The French Huguenots built a Chapel of Ease a few miles north of
LeNuds Ferry on the Britton's Ferry Road about 1730, and another
Chapel at Murray's Ferry, where they worshiped in their native
tounge using the Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England.
Abraham Michaux (Michaud--which Abraham?) was among the first to
cultivate Indigo and he became very wealthy from this activity.
History of Williamsburg County, page 58. The Huguenots who
settled in the province of Carolina had petetioned the King of
France to allow them to settle in Lousiana, but this request was
denied. This was one of the main reasons they sided with the
American colonist in the Revolutionary War. One Michau rode with
the Swamp Fox, Gen Francis Marion, who lived nearby. It also
caused the Huguenots to become more English in custom and
language. Not only did they later support the colonies but also
supported the south in its fight for independence. Wounded and
permantly disabled at Chiamangua was D F Michau and W C Ogburn
of Co. A, 10th Carolina Regiment and both Noah and Fletcher
Michau of the 4th Calvery, CSA.
Baird's Vol II, Huguenot Emigration to America, page 50,
published 1885. Came to South Carolina: Marguerite Perdriau and
her husband Daniel Huger from Poitou (La Chaune). Benjamin
Marion (Father of Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox) from Cheveaux,
Pierre Gaillard, George Juin from Aulnay of the Villediau, now
in Department of Charente Inferieure, formerly of Poitou. Page
61," Abraham and Pierre Michaux fugitives from La Villedieu,
Province of Poitou, joined the settlement on the banks of the
Santee River". Note: How can they be fugutives from France when
they were born and Christened in London in 1633 and 1635. No
other information is provided. From this I assume that brothers
Pierre and Abraham Michaud, may not have come with their parents
or wives when they came, so more than likely they were married
in England and came separetly, or got married in South Carolina.
I do not believe Abraham the son of this fugutive Abraham is the
same Abraham who marries Charlotte/Lydia, but he may be his
greatgrandfather, thus maybe two missing generations."
