My brick wall is Joshua Wilson, born 1740 probably in VA. Married
Catherine Hough/Huff.
No one has ever found his family. The book I mentioned has a very interesting
story --
Sometime near the beginning of the 1700s two Wilson's came to settle
in Fairfield, Rockbridge Co., VA from their home in Ireland. Later in 1721
a Matthew Wilson, born in Londonderry, Ireland in 1692 emigrated to American
and was probably the brother of the two men previously mentioned. Their
names were John Wilson who was also nicknamed "Old Burgess" and Dr. Thomas
Wilson. But Matthew and his family never reached America in quite the way
they intended. Their vessel caught fire at sea during the passage and Matthew
and his wife were badly burned rescuing their children and getting them
into a lifeboat. The children, James Wilson, Moses Wilson and Joshua Wilson
survived and were picked up and rescued, but their parents died of burns
in the lifeboat. The uncles "Old Burgess" and Dr. Wilson raised the three
boys. James was born in 1715 and died in VA in 1809. He was the oldest
in the lifeboat at the little age of six.
I seems you have some of these Wilson's names in your family also.
Have you participated in the Wilson DNA Study? My father, age 85 (Ellis)
has learned his Y-chromosome results and we are now having completed his
x. Some very interesting and surprising results. We are definitely Celtic,
probably English. So far, we have not matched other Wilson's in the study.
