JAMES
WILSON, SR., FAMILY JOURNAL
First Generation
1. JAMES1
WILSON SR. (#299) was born in Henry County, Virginia 16 Oct 1703.
Information from Hazel Henderson states James was born in Henry County,
Virginia. However, Henry County was not formed until much later.
It is therefore possible that he (without moving) could have been born
in Prince George County. James died before 21 Jul 1777 in Henry County,
Virginia, at approximately 73 years of age.
He married
MARTHA COWARDING in Henry County, Virginia, about 1730. Although
the information supplied by Hazel Henderson shows his marriage as about
1730 in Henry County, Virginia, Henry County was formed much later.
So it is possible he was married (without moving) in either Prince George
County or Brunswick County, depending on the actual date of the marriage.
(Martha is #300.)

will in Henry County, Virginia, 1 Apr 1777. I, James Wilson, Senr.,

James and
Martha had at least 4 children, Thomas, Moses, Martha and Ann. The
information on James Wilson, Sr., and his son Mason Wilson was provided
by Hazel Henderson. Hazel Henderson says that Thomas was not the
oldest child, but was older than Moses. However we do not at this
time have any information on any other children of James and Martha.
Note:
Henry County was named for Patrick Henry. It was formed from Pittsylvania
in 1776. Its area is 385 square miles, and the county seat is Martinsville.
According to Pam Wilson, the Virginia Genealogist says Henry County was
formed by an Act of 23 October 1776 from the western portion of Pittsylvania
County but the first court was not held until 1777. A portion of
Franklin County, which was created in 1785, was originally in Henry County.
Patrick County was created in 1790 entirely from Henry County.
Pittsylvania
County was named in honor of William Pitt, the great English statesman.
It was formed from Halifax in 1766. Its area is 1,022 square miles,
and the county seat is Chatham.
Halifax County
was named for George Montagu Dunk, second Earl of Halifax, who was president
of the Board of Trade from 1748 to 1761. It was formed from Lunenburg
in 1752. Its area is 808 square miles, and the county seat is Halifax.
Lunenburg
County was named for Lunenburg, one of the German possessions of England's
Hanoverian kings. It was formed from Brunswick in 1746. Its
area is 443 square miles, and the county seat is Lunenburg.
Brunswick
County was named for the duchy of Brunswick-Lineburg, one of the German
possessions of King George I. It was formed in 1720 from Prince George
but, because of the sparse population, county government was not organized
until 1732. In the latter year Brunswick was enlarged by the addition
of parts of Surrey and Isle of Wight. Its area is 579 square miles,
and the county seat is Lawrenceville.
Prince George
County was named for Prince George of Denmark, husband of Queen Anne of
England. It was formed from Charles City in 1702. Its area
is 284 square miles, and the county seat is Prince George.
Charles City
County named for Charles I of England and was one of the eight shires established
in 1634. Its area is 184 square miles, and the county seat is Charles
City.

Note: Although some births are stated as in Henry County, due to the dates of the formation of this county, they was probably born (without moving) in Brunswick or Lunenburg County. Lunenburg County was formed from Brunswick in 1746. Provided by Julie Voyles
