46. Thomas KNEEN [scrapbook] was born in Isle of Man. He died in Rushen, Isle of Man. Thomas married Ann KERMODE on 15 Dec 1842 in Kirk Christ, Rushen, Isle of Man. [Parents]

KIRK CHRIST, RUSHEN, ISLE OF MAN MARRIAGE RECORDS, LDS #0106743
Thomas Kneen bacholar and Ann Kernode, spinster, both of this parish were married in this church by license the 15th day of December 1842 by me G.S. Parsons, Govt. Champn
    This marriage solemized between us:
Thomas Kneen   his mark  x, Ann Kneen late Kermode  her mark   x
In the presence of John Kneen, William Youant & Thos Qualthough

(From this we know that Thomas Kneen and Ann Kermode can not write.
Note they are both "of" this parish, NOT "born" in this parish. Which I take to mean, they both were living in Rushen at the time of marriage.
Why were they married by a Govt. Champn.? there were only two couples on the microfilm married by a Government Champlain, Thomas & Ann and the couple whos entry was next. What does this mean? Was Thomas in some type of military service?
What was going on in1842 on the Isle of Man?
Thomas is listed as bacholar, not 'full age'.
Ann is only listed as spinster, not 'full age'.
Does this mean that they were under 'full age',
did they have to have family permission?)

Entry #1
1851 MICHAEL CENSUS, Pg. 56, Entry No. 41,
KNEEN, Thomas, head, Married, 27, Freehold Farmer, 52 acres, Ballaugh
      Ann, wife, married, 22, Michael
      Eleanor, Dau., 2, Michael
      Elizabeth, Dau., 6 months, Michael

Entry #2
1851 RUSHEN CENSUS, Pg. No. 25, Entry No. 108,
Thomas KNEEN, Port St. Mary, Son, Unmarried, 22, Joiner, Rushen

(I have put both enteries in because I believe the first entry is our Thomas, even though it is in Michael and not Rushen. Even though it says he was a farmer and that he was born in Ballaugh.
If Thomas Entry #1, was 27 in 1851, then he was born about 1824.
If Thomas Entry #2, was 22 in 1851, then he was born about 1849.
If Thomas Entry #1, was married in 1842, he was 17 years old.
Thomas Entry #2, was NOT married in 1851.
I know that Thomas and Ann were already married in 1842, making the first entry more likely than the second.
If Thomas is listed as single in 1851, and he was married in 1842, the second entry is unlikely.
The reason I have put the second entry is because that Thomas was in a family and "everyone" says this is his family, because his father is John."

If Ann is 22 in 1851, then she was born about 1829.
Look for Ann in the 1841 census as a child of 12, in a family of KERMODE.
Look for Ann in the 1831 census as a child of 2 in a family of KERMODE.
Had the KERMODE family already moved from Michael to Rushen by then? Check both parishes.
If Ann is 22 in 1851, then she was 13 when she got married.
Why would they get married that early? Thomas was 17, Ann was 13.

1867 RUSHEN PARISH MARRIAGES - LDS Microfilm #

Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by me Hugh S. Cple, Vicar. In the presence of us: James Hudgeon & Elizabeth Hudgeon.

(Thomas was over 21, I believe that is what 'full age' means.
Thomas was a widower in 1867.
     Thomas' trade is a joiner.
     Thomas' father is John Kneen.
    John Kneen is a wheelwright.
Ann died before 1867 if Thomas is a widower in 1867.

HISTORY OF DEXTER MAINE 1801-1901, by the Honorurable Stanley Plummer, page 8.
William Mitchell, who had been a student at the Gilmantion NH Academy and migrated to Athens ME from Sanbornton in 1800, came to this township in 1802, felled a patch of trees on Lot, No. 14, Range 4, at Carr's corner, built a cabin and returned to Athens. In the spring of 1803, he brought his family, consisting of his wife, an infant son, afterwards the Hon. Mordecai Mitchell, of Dover, and five daughters ranging from four to fourteen years of age, into the township and occupied the cabin built the year before. In coming from Athens, they encountered great hardship. A thaw set in and the winter road became so slumpy that it was extremely difficult for the teamster, who had undertaken to transport them together with some necessary articles of household utility to their new home to proceed. Finally when about six miles from their destination, he refused to go farther, unloaded the furniture and the family, left them in the midst of a sea of snow, and turned his face back toward Athens. Nothing daunted the family made their way with extreme weariness on foot and at last found a resting-place in the home of John Tucker, which seems to have been a wayside asylum for the emigrants of those days. Here this family tarried for three days, as had the family of Selba French only a short time before. Then, the weather having become cooler, they proceeded on the crust to their own cabin.
It is diffcult for us at this time to imagine the fatigue, hardship, and discouragement of such a journey as that, but the men and women of that generation indured to hardship, cheerfully undertook any task and made any sacrifice which seemed necessary to enable them to carve out for themselves homes in the world.
Mr. Mitchell's family was the fourth to settle in this township, and he taught the winter school of 1805-6 in Township 3, Range 5, now Garland, it being the first school taught by a man in the township. The family of Mr. Mitchell remained in this township until 1809, when they removed to the township since incorporated into the town of Dover.

54. Asa Asea BATES was born 7 Jul 1793 in Maine. He died 16 Apr 1857 in Springville, Erie Co., New York. Asa married Sarah MILKS.

Asa Bates was born on 8 June 1791 according to information found in the Historic Library/Museum in Little Valley, Cattaraugus Co., N.Y.  Asa Bates was listed in the 1850 U.S. Census as living in Otto, N.Y. and as having been born in Massachusetts.
Asa was married in about 1814, probably in Bolton, Warren Co., N.Y., to Sarah ("Sally") Milks.  Sally was the daughter of Lemuel and Mary (Thurston) Milk and was born on 5 July 1787 as per her gravestone.  Sally was listed in the 1850 U.S. Census as having been born in Massachusetts, however she was listed in the 1855 New York State Census as having been born in Connecticut.
Asa Bates was farming in 1850 according to the U.S. Census from that year, and he was listed as being unable to read nor write.
In the history, "Original Town of Concord" [Erie County, N.Y.], by Erasmus Briggs, is a list of names of persons who bought land of the Holland Land Company.  On the list is Amasa (Asa) Bates, Oct. 23, 1823, east part of lot 41, Collins; 190 acres for $807.  In an old atlas, that is where Lloyd Becker lived in about 1869.  He said east of his farm building on the top of the hill was an old well filled with stones.  If this was land Asa took up, evidently he didn't stay long.
In the History of Cattaraugus County N.Y., Pub. by L.H. Everts, 1879, Asa Bates was listed in the 1824 assessment roll for Otto, New York as having lot 7, township 5, range 8.
Asa Bates died on 16 Apr. 1852 in Otto, N.Y. according to the information found in the Historic Library/Museum in Little Valley, N.Y.  Sally (Milks) Bates died on 16 Oct. 1856 in Otto, Cattaraugus Co., N.Y. as per her gravestone.  Both are buried in North Otto Cemetery, North Otto Road, Otto, Cattaraugus Co., N.Y.

BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol, 1, by Cyrus Henry Brown, page 44.
The compiler remembers well, in the spring of 1848, Mrs. Brown's patience in suffering, when she quoted from Job, "All the days of my appointed time will I wait till my change come." This hightly esteemed and beloved wife and mother was a Christian woman, a loving friend and neighbor, whose voice was often heard in the Old Miner Meeting-house before 1845, when, in the summer of that year, it was torn down and a new house erected on the same lot. The old house was the scene of many revivals and large gatherings to the church, in which this good woman, a saint of God, by her spiritual gifts, had an active part. The homestead, beautiful for situation, should be rebuilt, and the grandchildren come back from the cold Northwest and make glad these hills and valleys as in days gone by.
