GENEALOGY of DAVID ELDER AND MARGERY STEWART, published 1905, by Thomas Alexander Elder, Wooster, Ohio.
Page 1:
The ancestral seat of the ELDERS was Elderslie, County of Renfrew, near Paisley, Scotland.  They had a "coat of arms". Some of them came directly to America, others first emigrated to northern Ireland, and thence to America.  Probably the first of the name to come to America was Robert of Paxtang, who, according to Dr. W. H. Eagle's genealogy, was born about 1679, in Scotland, emigrated from Louch Neagh, County Antrim, Ireland, where he had previously settled about 1730, to America, locating in Paxtang Township, then Lancaster, now Dauphin County, PA., five miles north of Harrisburg.
The subject of this work, DAVID ELDER, with Robert Elder, probably his brother, came to America, 1754-1760, from Louch Island of Inch, or Louch Swilly, County Donegal, Ireland.  His wife Margery, (or Margaret, all the family names following appear as Margaret) Stewart is said to have been a nobleman's daughter, to have been highly educated, and to have been very skillful in fancy needle work.
David and Robert Elder settled in Path Valley, Cumberland, now Franklin County, PA, near Dry Run.
David Elder's children claimed to be cousins of Sir Walter Scott, but whether the relationship was through the Elders or the Stewarts we have been unable to determine.  All of the descendants of David Elder have long ago left Path Valley, but many of Robert Elder's descendants still live there.  The early Elders were all Presbyterians.
