Newspaper obit for Col. Samuel ELDER, d.1900.  Another Obit from Pittsburgh 1900

Col. Samuel Elder, one of the best known and oldest citizens of Western Pennsylvania, died yesterday at his home near Ligonier, Pa.  He was born at Carlisle, Pa, in 1805 and the greater part of his life was spent in this state.  During his life he had resided at Carlisle, Uniontown, Brinton, Somerset and in recent years at Ligonier.  He was a Republican and prominent in the politics of Somerset county, where he at one time held the office of clerk of the Orphan's court, register and recorder.  He had voted for 13 Presidents of the United States.  Col. Elder was one of the owners of the old stage line that ran from Pittsburg to Chambersburg and while in the business made a large fortune, which he later lost in attempting to run the mail through by stage from Independence, Mo., to Salt Lake City.  In 1819 Col. Elder took a trip down the Ohio river in a flat boat, which was one of the last of its kind to make the trip on the local waters.  Col. Elder and his wife, Mrs. Margaret Armor Bell, celebrated their golden wedding on December 10, 1898, and their seventh daughter, Miss Fannie Elder, was married to Baker Johnson, of Frederick, Md., on the same day.  He is survived by his widow, and the following children:  Mrs. Martha J. Patrick, Mrs. Mary Hastings, of Philadelphia; Mrs. Alice Holliday, of Baltimore; Mrs. M.E. Hudson , of Marysville, Cal.; Mrs. A.E. Miller, Miss Josephine Elder, Samuel G., of Ligonier; George W. of Redding, Cal., and John B. Elder, of Pittsburg.  Mrs. Christian I. McKee and William E. Patrick, of this city, and James S. McCord of Philadelphia, are grandchildren.

12/04/2003:    More of Roy's notes about Samuel:
Col. Samuel Elder 1805-1900, in his obits they mentioned that he had lived in
Brinton Station for a while. ...
In the 1860s & 70's there was a Brinton Station on the Penn. Central main line
SW of Pittsburgh between Baddock & Turtle Creek around where East Pittsburgh is now.

Also son-in-laws and an aunt were from this area.
I can't find Samuel listed on the map so he may have moved to the Bell farm in Ligonier or sold out.

Also found a son William that I didn't have listed.

Can't find Samuel in 1870, but should have been west with the stage line running mail from
Independence MO. to Salt Lake City. He may have been a minor owner in what became the Pony Express & Wells
Fargo. I'm working on this!
