A letter by Jos. S. Hedges, Late Capt. 4th CAV and Brevet
Major:
"Nashville battle...took place about the 15th of Dec. 1864.
Our regiment was acting singly, reporting directly to Gen. J.H.
Wilson, chief of cavalry before the battle."
4th US were "detached" and sent from Minty's brigade, then in Georgia.
Joseph, age 28, seems to have arrived at the same battle,
where Josiah was guarding
the Post of Nashville-- when he was 16 years old.

LaFayette Bingham, Willard's Hotel, Washington, D.C. To Dear Sir.
Letter stating that he was
enclosing an application to raise a regiment of Zouave infantry
because the raising of a brigade
might not be thought practical at the present time and other regiments
of Zouave infantry could
be added to it if so determined in the future, that they could unite
in a brigade some thirty-five of
the original Zouave cadets, that the brigade would be an organization
of which Ohio could feel
proud, that he had written his friend, the Honorable John A. Bingham,
regarding the matter, and
that he had prepared a small work devoted wholly to the formation
of squares, after the system
of the French and Russian armies, which was simple yet plain and
comprehensible.
