RESEARCH in GALLATOWN, FIFE, SCOTLAND:
5. Robert Heron & Son, Fife or Gallatoun Pottery, Kirkcaldy,
Scotland, 1790-1928)
Photos:
http://www.scottishpotterysociety.co.uk/show.php?contentid=45
History:
http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/02-00/02-27-00/e08li168.htm
"Another name to look for is Fife,
or Gallatoun Pottery, which has a history dating back to 1790.
In more modern times, it made transfer-printed and painted wares,
as
well as colored and sponge-printed pieces. One of the high points
of
the firm was the production of Wemyss Ware, single-colored pots
based
on antique designs. Author Henry E. Kelly feels that this raised
the
pottery to a new level, because of the superior quality of the
painting.
Values in the book are given in both pounds and dollars and cover
a
wide range. Among the most valuable objects listed are: A Fife or
Gallatoun pug dog figure painted with flowers, $33,400;
a fine Delftfield Pottery creamware punch bowl with Scottish Masonic
Arms and the remains of painted swags of flowers, $2,500;
a large Wemyss Ware vase painted with flowers by Karen Nikola,
$16,700; an ornamental green Dunmore Pottery wall plaque depicting
a
cherub, $835; a beautifully modeled Possil or Saracen Pottery
porcelain figure of a water carrier, $2,500;
Fife or Gallatoun Pottery "Tygs" loving cups, painted with
colorful
flowers, $1,340-5,000; a Glasgow ("Bells") Pottery pair of
earthenware "Wally dugs," circa 1900, $585; a Jessie Marion King
Mowgli vase, $5,100; a Clyde punch bowl commemorating the royal
wedding of 1863, $270.

Wemyss Ware
http://www.wemyssware.net/about_wemyss_ware.html
The Flamboyant Scottish Pottery made by Robert Heron & Son in
Gallatown, Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland from 1882 through to 1930.
Wemyss Ware was the brainchild of Robert Heron. He had the idea
of
producing pottery which brought the images of garden and farmyard
in
to the house but to do this he needed to find the painters who could
bring his ideas to life.
So he brought some very talented decorators from the Continent across
to Fife to work for him, one of whom was a Czech called Karl Nekola.
Karl Nekola is today, as he was then, regarded as the success of
Wemyss Ware and their greatest painter.
Dish
Picture a Victorian house and imagine Wemyss Ware scattered through
it.
The kitchen with a Wemyss teaset decorated with black cockerels
awaiting the waking of the family so they can breakfast from it,
maybe a Wemyss Ware honey box depicting bees flying round a skep.
There would be an assortment of preserves in Wemyss pots decorated
with strawberries, plums and brambles to name but a few.
Farmyard Teaset & others
Cabbage Rose vase & others
Moving through to the drawing room we can see a tall Wemyss vase
decorated with cabbage roses sitting in the window. On a writing
desk
in the corner is an inkwell beautifully painted with sweet peas
and a
small Wemyss Ware yellow pig being used as a paperweight.
On the mantle piece there is a pair of tall candlesticks with cabbage
roses adorning the stems.
And just maybe there is a Wemyss Ware cat, his back covered in dog
roses, smiling contentedly as he warms himself by the fire!
Now we walk through to the dining room which has a Wemyss Ware
dessert set laid out on the table, each plate decorated with
different fruits - cherries, apples, oranges, greengages and grapes.
Green Ribbon Jug & Ewer and daffodil set
Upstairs in the bedrooms each room has its own washbasin set, some
have cherries, one has green ribbons and another has yellow
daffodils.
So in every part of the Victorian and Edwardian house Wemyss Ware
played its part and now in Newburgh we have a beautiful collection
of
Wemyss Ware waiting to take its place in your home - but if only
it
could tell you the story of where it's been and what it's seen!
At Newburgh Antiques we stock a large and ever changing collection
of
Wemyss Ware circa 1882 - 1930, from the early self-coloured piece
to
the late Jazzy and Langtoun ware.
We are also interested in buying whole collections or individual
pieces.
Lady Eva Vase
Today many potteries are producing copies of the original pieces
made
by Robert Heron & Son but none has captured the beauty of the
real
thing.
"To see a Wemyss Ware Lady Eva vase decorated by the great Karl
Nekola is to almost smell the perfume of the roses and to feel the
heat of the summer sun on them."
At Newburgh Antiques we have a first-rate collection of other
Scottish potteries, such as Methven, Morrison & Crawford, J.
M. P.
Bell & Company, Makmerry & Bough, to name but a few.
We also stock a good collection of Monart and Vasart glass, Scottish
paintings, Mauchline Ware, Tartan Ware, antique furniture and objets
