KINROSS-SHIRE
"ORWELL, a parish, containing the post-town of Milnathort, and the village of
Middleton, in the north of Kinross-shire. It is bounded on the eastern part of the south by
Loch-Leven, and elsewhere by the parishes of Kinross, Fossoway, Dunning, Forgandenny,
Forteviot, Arngask, Strathmiglo, and Portmoak.
Its length eastward is 9 1/4 miles; its greatest
breadth is about 3 1/2 miles; and its area is about 21 square miles. The surface, in all the
southern and south-eastern districts, is low, prevailingly level, and diversified with gentle
swells and rising-grounds; and thence it gradually rises into hilly heights, called the braes of
Orwell, and then, toward the northern boundary, shoots suddenly up into a frontier range of
the Ochils, with summits of about 1,000 or 1,100 feet above sea-level ... The parish is
traversed northward by the public road from Edinburgh to Perth, and eastward by that from
Stirling to Cupar.
 Population in 1831, 3,005; in 1861, 2,399."
from the Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland, edited by John Marius Wilson, 1868."

ANGUS county:
Liff, Benvie & Invergowrie
"The united parishes are about 3 miles in length and nearly the same in
breadth. The surface rises with an easy ascent from the Tay, except twoards
the south west where it joins to the parish of Dundee. The higher ground
forms a ridge, stretching obliquely in a direction from East to West, and
behind is an extensive tract of muir, where there are some plantations, but no
marks of cultivation. The muir is bounded by the water of Dichty, which rises
in the parish of Lundie, and runs south and east through the valley of
Strathmartin. There are several villages, viz, Locheye, Millhouse, Liff, Benvie
and Invergworie: the latter is noted as the site of the first christian church
erected on the north side of the river Tay." (The Gazetteer of Scotland, W
                       Chalmers, Dundee 1803)

                 Coupar Angus
" Coupar of Angus or Cupar is a considerable town and parish in the valley of
Strathmore, and though designated in Angus, by far the greater part is situated
in the county of Perth. The town is situated on the Isla, and is divided by
a rivulet into two parts; that part which lies south of that rivulet being all that
belongs to the county of Angus. The streets are well paved and lighted, and the
town has much improved of late years; thereis a town-house and steeple on the
spot where the prison of the court of regality stood. The linen manufacture is
carried on to a considerable extent, nearly 200,000 yards of different kinds of
cloth being stamped here. There is also a considerable tannery, and in the
immediate neighbourhood a large leachfield has been laid out. Besides the
town of Cupar, there are several villages, of which the largest contains about
100 inhabitants." (The Gazetteer of Scotland, W Chalmers, Dundee 1803)

PERTH:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/PER/Lethendy
"LETHENDY, parish averagely 3 1/2 miles south-west of
       Blairgowrie, Perthshire. Its post town is Blairgowrie. Its length is 5 miles;
its greatest breadth 1 1/2 mile; its area, together with that of Kinloch, to
which it is united, 7060 acres. Real property of Lethendy alone in 1880-81,
¬£2952. Pop. of Lethendy and Kinloch, 404. The west end of Lethendy, for
about 1/2 mile, is a rapid ascent, and the rest is all a gentle descent.
Lethendy Tower is a very old structure. The churches in the united parish
are 1 Established, 1 Free, 1 United Presbyterian; and there are 2 public
schools for respectively Lethendy and Kinloch."

2) An allegedly linked line is that of THOMAS ELDER 1737-1799
Lord Provost of Edinburgh and Postmaster General of Scotland, former wine merchant
who married Elizabeth Man. They had one son WILLIAM ELDER and their eldest of 4 daughters,
Isabella, married the Principal of Edinburgh University,
George Husband Baird 1761-1840. This line begins with William Elder Engineer in 17th century,
then Alexander Elder of Forres near Inverness, his son William Elder of Loaning near Pitlochry
b ca 1710 to 1780 at least, father of Thomas above and of Charles 1749-1823. Charles was in the Royal Navy and
taken prisoner by the Americans in 1777 for 13 months with an address at Rhode Island.
Later appointed to Lord Howe's flagship *The Eagle* and in
action against the French off Rhode Island in 1778. I would be interested to hear from anyone
who knows more about the origin of Alexander Elder in this
line, and about any collateral lines.

KING JAMES  meets HENRY ELDER of PERTH:
http://www.visitdunkeld.com/perth-royal-visitors.htm
[RE: King James' visit in 1617]
"James returned to Falkland Palace after his visit, and Perth Town Council seized

the opportunity to solicit his assistance towards “the expense of upholding the
Bridges of Tay and Earn.” The latter was in a ricketty condition, and had been so
for the past three years; the Tay bridge was that built by John Milne in 1605
presumably it had not yet been paid for! "...
"The deputation on the matter to Falkland Palace consisted of Alexander Peebles, bailie, and Henry Elder, treasurer.
James VI contributed 40,000 merks for the purpose of restoring The Bridge crossing the
Tay. But until 1771, 150 years after floods washed it away, no new bridge was constructed."

It will also include tenants and workers on the Threipland estates in Perthshire and Caithness, as well as local tradesmen.

Volunteers from the Friends of Perth & Kinross Council Archive will be continually updating the database,
so if you don’t find the person you’re looking for today, try again in a few months.
