Paisley Abbey
http://www.paisleyabbey.org.uk

Paisley Abbey was founded in 1163 as a Monastery of the Cluniac Order.
The founder of the Abbey, Walter Fitzalan, was the first hereditary High Steward of Scotland
and a forebear of the Royal House of Stewart. Varying styles of architecture from the 12th to 15th
centuries are featured in the nave, while the stone-vaulted ceiling of the Choir, with its sculptured bosses,
is a magnificent example of early 20th century restoration. The work of restoration continues and the finely carved
gargoyles on the south wall of the nave bear witness to the high standard of craftmanship available today.

WALLACE and ELDERSLIE:
http://www.braveheart.co.uk/macbrave/history/wallace/elder01.htm
The original form of Wallace meant "Welsh Speaking",
and we know that William's ancestors followed these "Stewards"
north as their vassals. In 1174 one Richard Wallace, who is
generally regarded as being William's ancestor, witnessed a
charter to the Abbey of Paisley.
The Wallaces were granted the lands of Elderslie sometime before 1250.

The map below dates from 1654.
It shows "Ellerslie" (near the bottom left of the map) near Paisley. The Wallace property
stands on the West bank of the Glenpatrick Water as the ruins do today.
It is shown fenced and surrounded by parkland.
