To all whom it may Concern
Know ye, That Robert H. Elder a corporal of Captain I.D. Marsh,
Company (C) 39th Regiment of Iowa Infantry Volunteers
who was enrolled on the Fifteenth day of August one thousand eight hundred and Sixty two
to serve Three years or during the war, is hereby Discharged from the service of the United States
this fifth day of June 1865 at Washington D.C. by reason of Expiration of terms of Service
(No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist.*)
Said Robert H. Elder was born in Indiana Co. in the State of Pennsylvania,
is 33 years of age, five feet 61/2 inches high, dark complexion, blue eyes, black hair,
and by occupation,  when enrolled a Farmer
Given at Washington D.C. this Fifth day June 1865

there is also a stamp on the upper right side next to the printed eagle (center upper third of the document).
It states “Paid June 19th 1865” the rest is not legible.
