Introduction:
" The Isle of Skye, off the northwestern coast of Scotland, is the largest of the Inner Hebrides.
"Be the many marvelous tales regarding Skye's heroes and heroines of prehistoric times true or not,
a spirit of warlike enterprise has existed in the island from the earliest period of which
we have any authentic record, and has been fostered by passing events (involving the strife of arms)
century after century up to the present day.
But it is with the share that "The Brave Sons of Skye" took in Britain's great wars in foreign lands
that this work more particularly deals."
Biographical sketches, of varying length and primarily focused on military careers,
are grouped by surname and place of residence.
Surnames listed include:
Beaton or Bethune, Campbell, Elder, MacAlister--tracing "their origin to Alasdair, or Alexander,
a son of Angus Mor of the Clan Donald," MacDonald, MacInnes, MacIbor,
MacKinnon, MacLean, MacLeod, MacQueen, Martins, and Nicholson.
Dr. John Grant, Sgt. John MacBeth, Col. Sir John MacRa,  Dr. Alexander Morrison,
Pvt. Hugh Robertson, the Battle of Mahidpore, the Battle of Moodkee,
and the Battle of Inkerman are also covered.
These sketches contain an abundance of genealogical material.
An abundance of portaits, a list of the original subscribers, numerous
brief excerpts from letters and other documents, and a fullname index augment this work.
Genealogists and historians alike will want to add this book to their libraries. "

ELDER Crest Notes:
BRODIE family members gave the antique Elephant to BJ ELDER in India (nephew of Sir George ELDER of Isle of Skye):
Description:
"Eastern bronze model of an elephant, mounted as a tooth pick holder in 1844 with silver coloured metal inscribed "To Capt. B.J.Elder from his affectionate little friends Eliza Gordon Brodie Russell and Lena H. Brodie Russell 1844."
The armorial to the reverse with the Elder family motto "Virtute Duce", may virtue be my guide.
Eliza Gordon Brodie Russell and Lena H. Brodie Russell were the grand daughters of The Rt Hon Sir Henry Russell Kt, 1st Baronet of Swallowfield, Berkshire 1751-1836. He was Chief Justice of Bengal 1807-1813. He married Anne Barbara Whitworth, sister of Charles Earl Whitworth 1764-1814.
They had a large family, and their 5th child, Francis Whitworth Russell 1790-1852 (known as Frank) married Jane Anne Catherine Brodie on 10th June 1823. She was the daughter of James Brodie of Brodie. Frank and Jane had at least 4 children including Eliza Gordon Brodie Russell 1831-1887 (who married Sir James Naesmyth of Posso, 5th Baronet 1827-1896) and Caroline H Brodie Russell 1834-? known as Lena who married Charles Goldsmid on 3rd May 1854. Both girls lived out their lives firstly in India, where Frank was a commissioner for investigating the debts of the Nabob of Arcot, and then in Scotland."
