Elspat Matheson b: 1765 Evelix & John Sutherland b: 1756 Thurso.
Elspat died in the Miekle Ferry disaster 1809 along with her youngest son George.
What happened to the rest of the family? I understand another son Angus b: 1785,
married an Isobel Gordon in 1811 & emigrated to Nova Scotia around 1812.
Im unsure whether the rest of John & Elspats children emigrated as well.

>George McIntosh (1773-1839), son of John McIntosh and Catherine McKay married Margaret Sutherland (1790-1885), daughter of William Sutherland and Catherine McKay and lived at Inchverry House, Tongue. Sons went to Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Daughter, Catherine married her cousin William McIntosh and later James McKay and remained in Tongue at Inchverry House.
Robert Gordon and wife Barbara McKay of Farr had daughter Barbara who emigrated with niece Barbara Gunn and her husband, Alexander McIntosh to Ontario, Canada. Another daughter, Johann (1800-1882) married Goerge Gunn and lived at Camster and Lybster, Caithness. Possible relationship into Campbells at Farr.
Angus McDonald born 1771 married twice. Second marriage to Isobel McKay born 1781. Lived Farr. Had 3 sons Hector, Hugh, William and daughter Elizabeth. William and Elizabeth possibly twins from second marriage. Hugh married Barbara McLeod. Elizabeth married Donald Gunn of Camster, Caithness. All families emigrated in 1840s to Ontario, Canada.
John McKay (1816-1885) son of John McKay and Catherine Elder, born Reay, Sutherlandshire married Flora Gunn (1821-1903), daughter of John Gunn and Janet Murray and born in Glasgow. The Gunns returned to Melvick where Janet died before John and daughters Flora and husband, and Catherine emigrated to Canada. Son William Gunn had alreaady emigrated in 1836. Missing sons Donald born 1824, Alexander born 1819, and John born 1827.
William Sutherland and Catherine McKay lived at Tongue where he was a stone mason. Their family included: 1. Margaret (1778-1873) married George Mc Intosh
2. George who died in 1850's leaving his sisters money
3. William unsure if a brother and was he the one who built 14 apartments in Aberdeen in 1839.
4. Donald - unsure if he was a brother
5. Barbara married Alexander Troupe and James Allison
6. Elizabeth married Donald McLeod and lived in Aberdeen
7. Helen (1794-1846) married Alexander Colquhoun and emigrated to Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada
8. Grace (1800-1889) married Duncan Mc Donald and emigrated to Australia

"John Elder, a member of the Collegiate Church at Dumbarton, became tutor
of the young Lord Darnley. He followed the fortunes of the Earl of Lennox when he fled to England.
That John Elder was selected by the Bishop of Orkney as the teacher of the boy abbot,
Abbot Walter Reid, is no small testimony to his capacity and worth.
The name of "Jean Eldas, pretre ecossois geographe du Roi de France"
in 1560, occurs in the Registers of the Chambre des Comptes, Paris (see J. Van der Meulen,
"Les Geographes du Roi, etc., " Bulletin de la Societe de Geographie d'Anvers, vol. i. 1878).
John Elder was a clever linguist, a good Latinist; and as to his English, he surpassed most
of the natives of the south in the clearness and pleasantness of his style.
He had written also in favour of the royal supremacy of Henry VIII; a popular pamphlet,
setting forth the advantages of the union of England and Scotland--a union into
which King Henry was then endeavouring to coerce Scotland at the point of the sword.
The little treatise, which is well known to black-letter collectors, proves
John Elder to have been a man in advance of his time, in regard to statistical wisdom--
the more remarkable, as the author claims to be a Highlander.
John Elder signs himself John Redshank--the appellation by which the Highlanders were known in the South."

"Dunbarton... on the north bank of the River Clyde where the River Leven flows into the Clyde estuary.
Dumbarton is split between the council areas of Argyll and Bute and West Dunbartonshire.
Dumbarton Castle, sitting on top of Dumbarton Rock, dominates the area.
Dumbarton was a Royal burgh between 1222 and 1975.
The castle was an important place during the Wars of Independence and was used to imprison
William Wallace for a short time after his capture by the English. It was also from here that
Mary, Queen of Scots, was conveyed to France for safety as a child.
Mary was trying to reach Dumbarton Castle when she suffered her final defeat at Langside."
