Implausibly
inscribed at foot, in pencil: "Coloured by Raeburn
himself". Elder of Forneth (1737-1799), Lord Provost of Edinburgh,
was, as a Baillie, one of the promoters of the rebuilding
of
Edinburgh
University. The foundation stone was laid during his term as
Lord Provost, and he is shown with the plans of this by him.
