ANDREW ELDER land lease in ERROL,  CARSE OF GOWRIE, near PERTH, Scotland, 1823    More about PERTH and ELDER

From:
ERROL: ITS LEGENDS, LANDS AND PEOPLE, by LAWRENCE MELVILLE,               Also see: ARGYLL (Campbeltown)
Published: PERTH: THOMAS HUNTER & SONS, LTD, 1935
( Interlibrary Loan book from Harvard College Library --7-24-04)
Memorial slip: "Bought from the Andrew Preston Peabody Fund,
Bequeathed by Caroline Eustis Peabody of Cambridge")

Pages 139-140:
"We are now to consider the terms of a lease of a much larger holding than those already mentioned, but on the site of which not a vestige of the farm buildings can now be seen.  We refer to the farm of 155 acres let by John Lee Allen in 1823 to ANDREW ELDER, who was formerly tenant at the Loan of Errol.  This farm, we should explain, lay south of East Leys and is now merged in New Farm.  We mention several of the conditions of let in order to show the differences in farming which have taken place since then.  The lease extends to no less than nine closely engrossed pages on foolscap deed paper, which in consequence of the Agricultural Holdings Acts could now be boiled down to one ninth part thereof.  The money rent is 431 16/- [pounds], with 75 bolls of wheat and 75 bolls of barley and 30 "good and sufficient hens or to pay one shilling and eight pence sterling for each undelivered hen."  The grain is to be delivered when required at Dundee, Perth, Port Allen, Polgavie, or any other place as may be directed.  It should be observed here that this obligation of delivery meant that if the grain were not shipped at Port Allen or Polgavie the tenant would have to pay heavily, for there were no railways in the Carse in these days.  There is also an obligation to pay to the "Ground Officer" of the Barony of Errol a sum of five shillings yearly, but we are left to conjecture who the Ground Officer was, and the reason of this levy.
We would have thought that the tenant would have been thirled to the Mill at Port Allen, but not so.  He is obliged to frequent the Mill of Aithmuire with his whole grindable corns, and to pay the usual services to this mill.  There is also the curious obligation to supply the proprietor with six sacks of oat chaff "fit for being put into a bed" at the "current price of the country."  The course of cropping prescribed is a seven shift rotation, fiz.:--(1) Fallow, (2) wheat after fallow, (3) peas and beans, (4) wheat, (5) barley, (6) grass, (7) oats.  It will be seen that potatoes and turnips are not mentioned, possibly because at this date these crops were not then generally grown in the Carse, or not suitable for the clay soil of the farm.  The other obligations in the lease are similar to those usually found in leases of the present day.  The reader will agree that no practical and experienced farmer could now pay such a large rent."

TEMPLETON CROCKER's MANSION (photo) - History of Crystal Springs Uplands School
at
http://www.csus.com/page.cfm?p=14

Mansion History
"In 1911, Templeton Crocker decided that he wanted to build his own
house as a wedding present for his bride, C & H sugar heiress Helene
Irwin.
Built at a cost of $1.6 million, the mansion renowned San Francisco
architect Willis Polk designed for Crocker contained 35,000 square
feet of living space, a 10,000 square foot basement, and 39 rooms
including 12 bedrooms and 12 baths.
It also featured a large wine cellar, elevator, dumbwaiter, four
staircases and mezzanine level quarters for servants.
The resulting mansion is not immense, but its interior of matching
marble walls, silk wall coverings, Italian ironwork and finely
crafted German woodcarving make it, according to local architectural
experts, "unsurpassed by any other mansion in San Mateo County."
The mansion was completed in 1917. A gala party for dozens of San
Francisco society members marked the opening. For ten years the
Crockers entertained lavishly several weekends of every month at
their "country home." The Crockers were, unfortunately, divorced in
1927 and the house was thereafter occupied by Mr. Crocker only
periodically, as a "summer cottage" and "hunting lodge."
In 1942, Crocker sold the property to Romie C. Jacks (Monterey Jack
cheese). Mr. Jacks died shortly after moving into the house, but Mrs.
Jacks continued to live in a few rooms on the second floor for almost
a decade, attended by 13 servants. In 1951, she rented the house to
the Soviet delegation to the Japanese Peace Conference, then being
held in San Francisco. The Russian consulate oversaw extensive
cleaning and refurbishing before the ambassadorial party moved in.
Local residents were astonished - and perhaps uneasy - to discover
Ambassador Andrei Gromyko and his party in their midst.
For several years thereafter the house was unoccupied and most of
the acreage was quietly sold for subdividing. The original gateposts of
the estate can still be seen at the foot of Uplands Drive and Stonehedge.
In 1956, the Crocker family reacquired Uplands, after a prospective
buyer was unable to raise the $95,000 asking price.
In March of that year, with the help of Mrs. Jennie Crocker
Henderson and the blessing of the San Mateo County Historical
Society, the Trustees of Crystal Springs School purchased the mansion
and 10 acres of surrounding land to be the school's permanent home.
Today, it serves as the focal point for a campus community of 350
students in grades six through twelve.
Templeton Crocker, that bon vivant patron of the arts and sciences,
would probably be well pleased with his mansion's new life."
