    Confusion regarding the birth year of Isaac R. Elder stems from inconsistent census records.
Eva Myrick points out that the 1840 census shows Isaac between the age of 20 and 30 which is consistent with the 1860 census.
The 1850 and 1870 census show Isaac as substantially older. Eva argues that the latter census are incorrect
and that Isaac was likely born between 1810 and 1820 or about 1817 as indicated in the 1860 census.
This logic then makes Thomas Elder a probable candidate to be Isaac father, and that
Mary was the mother of Thomas (age 75 in 1850 and living with Thomas) and grandmother of Isaac.
My records have been adjusted to reflect this. Additional comments are welcomed and encouraged.

    Robert Doly Bowman Elder born abt 1856 in Illinois and who died in 1925 at
Carlisle, Lanoke County, Arkansas has been reported to be a son of Isaac and Elizabeth (Chilcote) Elder.
In addition, Andrew J. B. Elder born about 1857 in Illinois was also reported to be a son of Isaac and Elizabth.
Based on the 1860 census there appears to be no consenus that these are sons of Isaac and Elizabeth Elder.
These two children do appear in the 1870 census.

"Little is known of James ELDER, Sr., before he came to Western Pennsylvania. There are records of a James
 ELDER in Slippery Rock Twp, in what is now Butler Co. as early as 1799. Some land records have been found in
 today's Warren Co. of ELDERs, including James before 1810. James and family appeared in Toby Twp.,
Armstrong County, by 1810. This area in 1839 became Perry Twp, Clarion County.
James ELDER (1769/1837) was married twice and had eighteen children. His first wife was Catherine
BUCHANAN (1769/1813) was mother of the first eleven; His second wife was Sarah "Sally" HAGAN (born ca

There are no record of these last 2 children listed here in the 1860 census with Isaac and Elizabeth.
They are in the 1870 census.
Elizabeth's father John Chilcote/Chilcoat is living with them in the 1860 census. John is 64 at the time.
Isaac was between the age of 20 and 30 in the 1840 census.
However, in the 1850 census the census taker misentered his age as 53.
In 1860 he is age 43 making him 23 in 1840, 33 in 1850.
Then again in 1870 census there is a big age jump, he is listed as 63.
It is my oppionin that Thomas was not his brother but his father.
And Mary that lives with Thomas was Thomas's mother and Isaac's grandmother,
she was 75 in 1850 born in Pennsylvania as was Thomas.
In the 1850 census Thomas was 56, making Thomas 46 in 1840 figuring by the 1850 census.
In the 1840 census he was between the age of 40 and 50 yrs old.
There were the only 2 Elder families living in Hocking Co, Ohio in 1840.
When they moved to Illinois by 1850, they lived right next door to each other again.
Isaac purchased 40 acres of land on 8-3-1853 in Effington Co., ILL.
On 1-25-1851 there is one Abner Elder who married Mary Polings in Hocking Co.
He was 33 in 1860 making him fit Thomas's son 10-15 age range in the 1840 census.
Thomas's sister Isabella Elder married James Justice on 11-18-1838 in Hocking County, Ohio.

Samuel B. first married a Sarah unknown. She died between 1870 and 1872.
Then 1n 1872 he remarried to Amanda Gates.
Nancy married William Taylor Scallions on 12-11-1870 Hamilton, Prairie Co. Ark.
Susan A. married David J. Wood 10-15-1871 in Hamilton, Prairie Co., Ark.
Ester married Henry A. Gragg on 8-31-1868 Hamilton, Prairie Co., Ark.
Joshua married Sarah Unknown.
Robert Bowman married first Elizabeth Teage.
She died shortly after the birth of their first born son James in December of 1879.
Robert's sister Nancy and William Scallions adopted James before he was 5 months old.
Robert later married Mary Drake 6-1-1884 in Prairie Co. Ark.

Thomas' sister Isabella did not marry James Justise 18 Nov 1838 in Hocking County.
It was more than likely his daughter. His sister Isabella married
Daniel Exline, Sr. 3 May 1814 in Ross County, Ohio and was married to him
until his death 27 Aug 1851 in Jackson Co., OH. See 1850 Lick Twp, Jackson Co., OH census page 285.

I descend from Samuel B.(David) Elder b.1842. His first wife was Sarah Jane Hooten
and they married on Valentines Day in 1863 Effingham Co., Illinois.
He changed his middle name from B.? to David like his uncle Samuel David Elder b.1819 Ohio.
His second wife was Amanda Gaither/ Gater. They misspelled her name on the Marriage Certificate.
She was the daughter of Jackson Gaither and Lucinda Scallorn.
