A message from Mary Frances Morrow of the National Archives and Records
Adminstration:
What you are accessing at the following address
Microfilm catalog
is a copy of the catalog for microfilm records on American Indians available
from the National Archives. Many if not all of these microfilms that relate
to censuses and enrollments can also be accessed through one of the Family
History Centers of the Church of the Latter Day Saints-- look in the Yellow
pages of your phone book (or at one of the listings provided here): they
have them in many cities across the nation. You can borrow these microfilms
from the American Genealogical Lending Library [801 298-5358]. The nice thing
about this is that they offer more films there on Indian Genealogy than are
offered in the National Archives Microfilm Catalog. That is because the catalog
only lists those films that are "publications" of the National Archives
Publications Sales Branch. In fact, the National Archives Branch at Fort
Worth has hundreds of other films for sale, and cheaper. You can write them
at National Archives Southwest Region, 501 West Felix Street, P.O. Box 6216,
Fort Worth, TX 76115, for a list of their microfilms on American Indian
Genealogy. Remember that these are copies of original records that were compiled
for various purposes and the background information on that is not always
available. Sometimes you can figure it out from the "bible," "Guide to Records
in the National Archives of the United States Relating to AMERICAN INDIANS,"
by Edward E. Hill, published by the National Archives in 1981, and available
in many large libraries, or for sale from the Publications Branch [800-234-8861]
. You can also purchase that microfilm catalog for a minimal cost from this
number.
