This is a picture of Martha M. CROWDER. The original photography was taken around 1890. Martha was born on the 9th day of January 1832, and she died on the 28th day of October 1922. Her Dawes Commission Roll number is No. 12916. She married (1) Hiram KING, Jr. and (2) Starnes W. FOLSOM (Dawes Roll No. 12915). She is the daughter of Harris and Nancy (WILKINSON) CROWDER. Harris CROWDER was a Choctaw and Nancy WILKINSON CROWDER was a White. Martha is the half-sister of John HENDRIX, Melodie Sanders' Great- Great-Grandfather. The original photograph is owned by Melodie Sanders.

Personal note from Karen

HI . What can I say about my people and who I am. Most of you know me as PrinyP or GFS Karen . So now it is time for me to say a little about me. I am Karen Price/Pfister my father is Dennis Joseph Price.

I started looking for my Ancestors when I was 17 yrs old. When I graduated from high school I wanted to go to college and study forestry, and science. I asked my father if he could help me go to school and sadley he could not. But that day he showed me a picture of two men. Telling me one is your Grandfather and the other is you Great Uncle. I sat there and looked at the picture back in the 60's and in my heart I knew where I came from and finally where I belonged. I said, "Dad my Grandfather is Native American." and he said yes. We are of the Cherokee and Choctaw Nations. I asked my father who my Grandfather was and he said I do not know. I have not seen him in many years. My Grandmother took my father from him when he was one. Never to see his father or know his heritage ever again.

So that day I started looking for FRANK ALLEN PRICE. Not only for me but for my Father. I wanted him to have his heritage back and also find mine. I knew it was within my heart and in my spirit , but now I wanted to hear the stories and the tales that I missed and my father missed.

I am now 47 and in the last 5 years I have learned who I am and also found my Grandfather, an Aunt I did not know I had also many cousins. I am Runswithponies Great Granddaughter of Dennis Trammell Price and Joanna Carr. Both of the Cherokee /Choctaw Nations. My family traveled on the Trail of Tears, stayed in Arkansas and then moved to Oklahoma. I am proud to be a part of them. And proud that my father has a sister and now knows his father.

I am still learning of my people and still committed to helping all of our people come back together, with families and their Nations. This is why I work so hard at what I do . I may not do it right away , for I want to make sure it is right. I always lived with the saying in my heart.

" The land is here to use, love, care for, and respect. Share it with your brothers and sisters, for it is theirs also. Our Great Spirit Mother will Protect us for all the days to come. So give back to the land what you take,."

I pray that all will love our earth the same way. And that our people will be as one again someday.

Though since Karen sent a personal message I' give you a little background on Melodie who has done a lot of research to help others. So I am sneaking a little bit of the information she has given me. I am very proud to have friends like her and Karen, and count myself a very lucky person

Melodie's Great-Great-Grandfather John Hendrix and his mother were among the removed Choctaw. They came in 1851 to the Choctaw Nation, IT. Melodie is a Serials Cataloger, but have worked as a Reference Librarian, and just about every other library position from Circulation Clerk to where she is now. She started working in libraries in 1974, got my MLS from Univ. of Oklahoma in 1984. Her BA is in Psychology, minors History and Sociology. She went to Northeastern State College (now, University) in Tahlequah. She took every American Indian course they offered. My History is almost all American Indian or U.K. history. The Sociology is almost all Anthropology and the Instructor she took the most under was a Cherokee Anthropologist. (His wife is Janie Noble who is the author of a Cherokee book on the Removals.)

My Grandmother HALL began doing genealogy the year she was born. And she always had an interest in the tribes which Grandfather was agent to. When Grandfather retired in 1959, he was the Superintendent of the New Mexico-Arizonia region for the BIA. He worked for the BIA for 50 years. (He also was Head of the Osage Agency at one point in his career. That's where my interest in the Osage comes from.) After Grandfather retired, hey moved to Tahlequah. Grandfather became interested in the genealogy and with several Lowrey cousins, began the LOWREY family reunions in Tahlequah. (And also began HALL family reunions, too.)

As she grew up she was exposed to Grandfather's pride in being Cherokee and learned all about the famous relatives. When she was in her teens, I accompanied Grandfather on some of his visits to Whitefield (Haskell Co.)where he had been born and raised. He was interviewing the old-timers and eventually (1971) finished and published his book on Whitefield. (Oklahoma Indian Territory / Ted Byron Hall). Accompanying him on those visits sparked my interest in Oklahoma/Indian Territory history in Junior High and High School. Her grandfather book sparked her interest.
