Margaret Foster
Margaret Eva Foster
1872 - 1934

Margaret Eva Foster, was the second born and only daughter of James Foster and Barbara Eliza Lipsett. She was born on October 10, 1872 in Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada, her brother David being born 10 years previous and William following a year later.

At age 22 years she married Berkley R. Vail on her Birthday, October 10 1894 in Queens County. Berkley Vail was a widower, a farmer, his wife, Emily (Thorne) Vail having died the previous year leaving him with 4 young, motherless boys.

The last born, Otty, he adopted out as an infant to Thomas and Millie Cain, because he could not look after him having no wife. Margaret instantly became a loving step-mother to Elias, Wilfred, and James Vail.

A little over a year after their marriage, Margaret gave birth to a daughter, Gertrude Augusta, on January 28, 1896. Berkley and Margaret, at this time were living in Hatfield's Point, neighbours to the Case family, the Thorne's and the Horncastle's, to name a few.

As far as we know, they were a loving, happy family and Margaret was very close to her daughter Gertrude living very close by, even after Gertrude married and had a family of her own. On February 9, 1934, Berkley Vail died. Five years later she lost her dear daughter Gertrude at the age of 43 years.

Margaret remained in her own home a number of years helping her only grand-daughter to raise the now motherless grandchildren.

During the year of 1947, at the age of 75, she went into a nursing home as there was no one left to look after her. Less than a year later she died of a broken heart at the age of 76 years and was buried in the Bayview Cemetery, Hatfield Point, beside her husband.
