William R. Mooring

William R. Mooring is the earliest documented ancestor of Moorings who descended from his son James R. Mooring.  William farmed and lived in Greene County, North Carolina in the mid-1800s.  He was in the Civil War and had his left arm amputated after he was wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg.  Pension records indicate he was living in 1904.  He probably died in 1905 because he was removed from the pension eligibility list that year.

Very little is known about the Mooring family in the 1700 and 1800s but historical records indicate that the Moorings lived primarily in Pitt and Greene Counties of North Carolina.  Some Moorings also migrated to Wayne County in the 1800s.
