D-Line Jacob and Catherine Neff

The following is a major update in the chronological order of the children of Jacob and Catherine Neff, the progenitors of the D-Line. When writing up this family in 1991 for my Neff Families and their Descendants, I had followed author Richard Gary Schmidt’s family listings in his book entitled Sixteen Maryland Families, Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, MD, 1981. My decade of studying Maryland primary records now shows that Schmidt had the wrong Henry in Jacob Neff’s family. The Henry Neff b. 1721 in Schmidt’s list has been proven to be part of the Neffs of the S-Line who also lived in Maryland. [Neff News –May 1995, pages 9-13 and Sept 1995, pages 7-14]

This revised listing of the children of Jacob Neff [D] is necessary because it has become evident that the children as listed in the wills of their mother and their brother John are not listed in traditional order of birth. While the exact birth order of the children is unknown, this revised listing, based on known primary records, must be close to being correct. There were probably 2 children born in Bonfeld. They could be D1 and D2 or they might have died in route to Pennsylvania. All of Jacob’s family went to Frederick Co in 1740 except Francis Neff [D1]. Because the order of the children has now changed from my 1991 listing, the ID numbers have also been revised. Recent research shows that Jacob and Catherine immigrated with Dr. Hans Heinrich Neff [A2] in 1717. He was one of the two Neff brothers who came from Bonfeld, Germany with the families of Heinrich Funk and his son Martin Funk. We now know that Dr. Francis Neff [A1] did not come to PA until 1719 directly form Dühren, Germany. [See the A1-Line]. Dr. Hans Heinrich Neff and Heinrich Funk settled in what became Lancaster Co., PA, northeast of the City of Lancaster on the Conestoga River. Jacob Neff and Martin Funk settled in Coventry Twp, Chester Co., PA where Jacob took out a warrant for 200 acres of land in 1717. When surveyed in 1735 it contained 232 acres. In 1735 Jacob moved his family to Kreutz Creek, Lancaster Co., now in York Co., PA. In 1740 he moved on to what became Frederick Co., MD.

Francis D1 was the only member of the D Line who did not move with his parents to Frederick Co., MD. If both Adam and Margaret died without heirs before 1830, then we are missing a child in this family because Francis had 7 heirs in his brother John’s final estate settlement in 1830.

The birth order of the above children is uncertain. In Henry’s estate settlement Adam is listed as the oldest son. Adam studied medicine under Dr. Hans Heinrich Neff A11 in Shenandoah Co., VA in the early 1780s and was a witness to A11’s will in 1784. Adam evidently married and had at least one daughter, but when he died in 1815 he had neither wife nor children. Adam, Abraham and John all died without descendants and therefore their brother Henry’s children and the children of their sisters were the heirs to their property.

Catherine was no doubt married twice. She was probably first married to John Ripligh who in 1762 received land from Catherine’s mother also named Catherine. Catherine had 8 children in her brother John’s estate in 1830 but only 3 Bucher children are known at this point.

The older children were born in Cambria Co., PA near Brownstown, a town near Johnstown. Most of the children after marrying in Scioto, Co., OH moved on to Lawrence and Clay Counties, IL.
