Northeast Texas Genealogical Library Resources  19th Century Northeast Texas Settlers' Records An ancestor who arrived in Texas in the 19th Century overland or by the Red or Sabine rivers passed into or through three of the original counties of the Republic of Texas: Nacogdoches, Red River, or Shelby. The 23 counties of the Northeast Texas area were all formed from those original three. Into this vast, fertile, and, as one moved southward, heavily-forested region, came the immigrants to what would become the state of Texas. Sometimes the area was the ultimate destination and sometimes just a pause in the journey farther south or west into Texas. These early transplanted Anglo-Americans included settlers, adventurers, and those hungry for free or inexpensive land or power. To the south the main entry was the settlement at Nacogdoches and to the north newcomers crossed the Red River, often at Jonesboro, into Texas. Two historic figures using that northern route were former Tennessee politicians Sam Houston and David Crockett. The transition of the area from 19th Century homeland of Caddo and associated tribes and the Cherokee and associated tribes to Anglo settlements was complete by 1839 with the defeat of the Cherokee in the Battle of the Neches where Republic of Texas troops defeated an Indian force under Chief Bowl in Henderson and Van Zandt counties. Because no single large metropolitan area has dominated Northeast Texas, records left by the settlers and their descendants do not reside in one large repository. Instead they are located in public libraries or genealogical and historical society research libraries and courthouses in each of the 23 counties. As an aid to the researcher living a great distance from a specific county, this site features information on what published or collected records are available at each county's main genealogical library as well as links to online information and resources.
