Marriage and Death Notices From the Up-Country of South Carolina as taken from Greenville newspapers 1826 - 1863 compiled by Brent H. Holcomb, C. A. L. S. (Searches were for the following surnames: Green, Greene, Humphrey and Davis) Description: The marriage and death notices contained in this database are from four newspapers, all published in Greenville, South Carolina. This county seat is located near the border with North Carolina and Georgia, but these newspapers covered persons from throughout the state and region. Notices in this collection date from 1826 to 1863, and can include persons from Alabama, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, and Virginia. The four newspapers are, the Greenville Republican, Greenville Mountaineer, Southern Patriot,and Southern Enterprise. Bibliography: Holcomb, Brent H. Died in Chester District on the 15th ult., in the 12th year of her age. Miss Martha, daughter of Maj. A. J. Green. (poem) (August 26, 1826) Married in this town on Tuesday evening last, by the Rev. Mr. Landrum, E. T. Smith, Esq., of Spartanburg to Miss Elizabeth R. Green. (April 7, 1832) Departed this life on the 25th inst., Mrs. Theresa Green, consort of Elisha Green, Esq., in the 68th year of her age, 51 years of which time she performed all the duties of an affectionate, amiable and attentive wife and mother, and with mildness and kindness, all the relative duties of a good mistress and neighbor. Several years previous to her death she became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. (May 30, 1835) Married in Savannah, Geo., on Tuesday morning, the 28th of November, by Rev. Benjamin Burroughs, Mr. Charles Green of England to Miss Catharine Jane, daughter of the late Benjamin Burroughs, Esq., of Savannah (Dec. 29, 1837). Married on the 8th inst., by the Rev. J. G. Landrum, Mr. Garrison Green, of Spartanburgh, to Miss Sarah Vaughn of Greenville District Died in this District, on the 2d inst., Mrs. Polly Green, wife of Mr. Joseph Green, aged about 50 years. Married on the 20th Dec. last, by the Rev. Gideon Woodruff, Mr.Green B. Nations to Miss Sarah Austin, all of Greenville District Married on the 7th inst., by the Rev. Mr. Hutchings, Mr. Middleton Green to Miss Rachel, daughter of Mr. John Mahaffy, all of Greenville District. Married a few weeks since in the public road near Grassy Pond, Spartanburgh District, by Andrew Bonner, Esq., Mr. Larkin Green to Miss Elizabeth Boswell. Married on Tuesday evening last, by Rev. Acker, Wm. H. Green, Esq., of Hamburg, S.C., to Miss Georgia Ann B. Ioor of Greenville. Married on the 19th ult., by the Rev. Mr. Hutchings, Mr. Samuel Green to Miss Jane W. Wood, both of Spartanburgh. Married in Gwinnett County, Geo., on the 28th March, by the Rev. Mr. Rambo, Mr. E. Green to Miss Mary A., third daughter of John Wood, Esq., formerly of Spartanburgh District, S.C. Married in Hamburg, on Tuesday evening, the 27th ult., by the Rev. Mr. Hutchings, Mr. James M. Robinson, Junior publisher of the Journal, to Mrs. Eliza A. Green. Died in Spartanburgh District, on the 2d inst., at the residence of Rev. John C. Green , Mr. Jonathan Davis in the 35th year of his age. The deceased had been a resident of Greenville District for the last fifty years and a member of the Baptist Church about forty. He was a kind and affectionate husband, a tender parent, a warm friend, and an obliging neighbor. He was a soldier of the Revolution, and received a pension for his services. He has left a numerous train of relatives and friends to mourn his loss. [This person must have been 85 years old] Married on Thursday, the 17th ult. by S. R. Whitten, Esq., Mr. John Green to Miss Nancy Fisher. (April 1, 1842) Married in this town, on Tuesday evening, the 3d inst., by the Rev. Z. W. Barnes, Mr. Ezekiel M. Spriggs to Miss Martha Green, all of this District. On Tuesday evening last by the Rev. S. Powell, Mr. Leroy H. Green to Miss Frances Clardy, all of this District. On the 7th inst., by the Rev. J. C. Green, Mr. Zarah W. Green to Miss Amelia M. Bailey, all of Greenville District. On Thursday evening, the 21st inst., by the Rev. Stephen Powell, Mr. Roderick Warren Gooddard to Miss Emily, daughter of Leroy Green, Esq., all of Greenville District. On Tuesday evening the 21st inst., by the Rev. Jefferson Barton, Mr. Robert Wynn to Miss Adeline, daughter of Mr. John Green, all of Greenville District. Died in the Village of Greenville on the 11th inst. after an illness of about five months, which he bore with Christian fortitude and resignation, Mr. Thomas Green in the 66th year of his age. The deceased was a native of Pauquier County, Virginia, but had been a resident of South Carolina for many years. He has left a large number of relatives and friends. On the 29th ult. by the same, Mr. Anderson Green to Miss Nancy Watson, eldest daughter of Capt. Thomas Watson. Married on the 5th inst., by the Rev. J. M. Roberts, Mr. G. W. Green to Miss Emma H., daughter of B. Statham, Esq., all of this town. (March 13, 1846) Died at his father's residence, four miles and a half north of Jacksonville, Ala., on the 9th day of September last, in the 21st year of his age, Miller McAfee Green, eldest son of Wm. and Nancy Green of Benton County. A call was made for volunteers to go to the Rio Grande and with the Benton Guards he marched to the frontier, in defence of his country's rights. While there he was taken with measles and continued in bad health. On obtaining an honorable discharge he made an effort to reach his home, which he effected on the 3d day of September. In a few days he was prostrated. Married on Thursday evening the 4th inst., by Rev. J. M. Roberts, Mr. Washington Moore to Miss Amanda, daughter of Mr. John Green, Sen., all of Greenville District. (March 12, 1847) Died at his residence in Greenville on the 7th of July last, in the 56th year of his age, Mr. Leroy H. Green. The deceased was long known as one of the most respectable farmers of this District. He had been a member of the Baptist Church for 15 or 16 years. The deceased has left a widow and children and grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends who will long cherish his memory. Married in Greenville District, on the 4th inst., by the Rev. Samuel Gibson, Rev. John C. Green to Mrs. Salina Taylor, all of this District. (December 8, 1853) Departed this life on the 28th February ult., at her residence in this District, Mrs. Amelia Green, consort of Rev. John C. Green, aged 61 years, 10 months and 18 days, leaving a truly afflicted husband and one son. (eulogy) Married on the 28th March, by the Rev. William Crane, Rev. Stephen Powell and Mrs. Frances Green, all of Greenville. (April 15, 1852) Died at his residence on Enoree River, in Greenville District, of general delibity, on 30th June 1852, Mr. George Green in the 86th year of his age. He removed to this District about the year 1785 and has lived here ever since. When quite young he united with the Baptist Church. He leaves a widow, twelve children and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. (July 15, 1852) Dr. Curren M. Lankford of St. Clair County, Alabama, died at his residence on the 17th inst., aged 34 years. He was a native of Rutherford County, N. C., but resided for several years in Greenville District, S. C. and in 1846 located in Alabama. In August 1848 he married Miss N. D. Green of Mississippi, who with three children now mourns the loss (eulogy) (October 28, 1852) Married on Sunday 21st inst., by H. T. Thompson, Esq., Jesse D. Green and Miss Jane Caroline Dean, both of Greenville District. (November 25, 1852) Married on the 18th December 1862, by Rev. L. Vaughn, Mr. G. T. Hughes, and Mrs. Milley Green, all of this District. (January 8, 1863) Married on Thursday evening, the 6th inst., by C. J. Elford, Esq., Mr. Thomas Ferguson, to Miss Mary Humphrey, all of Greenville District. (April 16, 1847) Married on the 17th ult., by the Rev. S. Powell, Mr. Aldridge Greene to Miss Nancy, daughter of Mr. Robert Hawkins, all of this District. (May 2, 1845) Married on the 28th ult., by the Rev. Nathan Berry, Mr. Nathan Davis to Mrs. Elizabeth Cureton, all of this district. (July 21, 1827) In Pendleton, on Sunday last, the 16th inst., Dr. Henry W. Davis, in the 32d year of his age. (eulogy) Married on the 27th ult., by L. H. Dickie, Esq., Mr. Jesse Davis, in the 71st year of his age, to Miss Rebecca Russell, all of this District. Died at his residence in the upper part of this District, on the 3rd inst., of a pulmonary complaint, Mr. Zerah Davis, aged about 46 years, leaving three small children to mourn their irreparable loss Died at Lodi, Abbeville District, S. C., on Monday the 6th inst., of bilious fever, Mr. Wm. M. Davis, of Lincoln County, N. C. Married on the 26th ult., by the Rev. Mr. Buist, Mr. James Pearson to Miss Rebecca Davis, all of Spartanburgh District (Jan. 3, 1840). Married at the seat of Mrs. M. L. Davis on Black River, on Thursday, the 5th inst., by the Rev. John Forrest, Hon. Thomas Bennett to Mrs. Jane H. Gordon, relict of the late John Gordon, Esq., both of Charleston (Mar. 27, 1840). Married in Spartanburgh District on the 30th ult., by the Rev. Mr. Hutchings, Mr. J---- (James?) Kennedy to Miss Elizabeth Davis. Married on the 29th ult., by the Rev. Mr. Scruggs, Mr. Benson Davis to Miss Hannah Blake, both of Rutherford County, N.C. Married on the 6th inst., by the Rev. Mr. Scruggs, Mr. James Davis to Miss Mary, eldest daughter of Mr. Philip Watkins, both of Rutherford County, N.C. Died in Spartanburgh District, on the 2d inst., at the residence of Rev. John C. Green, Mr. Jonathan Davis in the 35th year of his age. The deceased had been a resident of Greenville District for the last fifty years and a member of the Baptist Church about forty. Davis, all of that city. (May 19, 1843) On Tuesday evening the 2d inst. by the Rev. Jonathan Galloway, Mr. William T. Moore to Miss Elliott D. Davis, all of Newberry Village. Departed this life, in the upper part of this District, on the 22d Sept., Mrs. Harriett R. Sudduth, wife of William L. Sudduth, and daughter of Ephraim and Harriett Davis, aged 15 years, 9 months and 17 days, left a husband and infant child. (October 20, 1854) Married on Wednesday evening, 28th ult., by Rev. Whitefoord Smith, D. D., Mr. W. B. Davis of Prince Williams Parish, and Miss Margaret Ann Smith, of this place, only daughter of Whitefoord Smith, Esq. (November 5, 1857) Married at Society Hill on Tuesday the 10th inst., by the Rev. Richard Furman, Timmerman Davis, Esq., of Charleston, S. C., to Miss Cornelia J., daughter of the late Dr. J. K. McIver of the former place. (November 19, 1857)
