Welcome to the FreeCEN Somerset page. Our project aims to record the census records for Somerset (including the present North Somerset) for the census years of 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 as part of the overall FreeCEN project. Our aim is to transcribe, check, validate and upload these censuses to the Internet so that everyone can search them for free. This will allow anyone who is interested in genealogy, their family history or general historical research to gain access to this information.

Progress

The County project for Somerset was relaunched in late 2004. Our July 2005 and October 2005 Newsletters highlight some key points about the project and our progress so far.

Over 40% of the 1861 census has been issued to transcribers. About 17.5% of this census has been transcribed and is either being checked or is awaiting checking.

The first piece of 1891 is being validated and there are several other pieces being transcribed or checked.

The 1871 has now been launched and a transcription and checking team is being formed.

We are actively seeking transcribers and checkers.

The projects for 1841, 1861, 1871 and other years do not require a fiche reader. These censuses are part of a CD based project. CDs are provided free on loan via the project coordinators by LDS. Thanks is given to the LDS for their support of this project.

Transcriptions are done on a spreadsheet to the FreeCEN format. Any mainstream spreadsheet program can be used. Help is given to volunteers at all times.

Checkers will be provided with a special checking program to assist in the checking process.

If you are able to assist, or would like more information, please contact the County Coordination Team.
