First Generation

1. William FURBISH. Born in Scotland. William died in 1694/1701.

About 1664 William married Christian, in Kittery, ME.

 They had the following children:

It is said that William was a prisoner at the battle of Dunbar and was deported to New England, arriving on the ship "Unity". According to the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, William was taxed in Dover in 1659. Settled in Eliot in 1664. In 1679 he was fined for abusing, and Rebecca for striking, a constable. They were fined for talking against the government in 1683. In 1686 he was prosecuted for getting Indians drunk. His estate was settled in 1701.

 

Second Generation

2. Daniel FURBISH. Born in 1665 in South Berwick, ME. Daniel died in 1745.

In 1689 Daniel married Dorothy PRAY, daughter of John Quinton PRAY (1632-1676) & Joanna DOWMAN (1636-). Born in 1668 in Eliot, York, ME. Dorothy died in Kittery, ME in 1744/1745.

They had the following children:

Catherine married Andrew NEALE (1664-1739), son of John NEALE and Joanne SEARLE.

5. Hopewell FURBISH. Born on 12 May 1672.

Hopewell married Enoch HUTCHINS (1671-1706), son of Enoch HUTCHINS and Mary STEVENSON.

6. Sarah FURBISH. Born in 1674/1676 in Kittery, ME.

Sarah married Thomas THOMPSON (1673-1715), son of Miles THOMPSON and Anne TETHERLY.

7. Bethia FURBISH. Born in 1678.

Bethia married Joseph GOOLD.

8. William FURBISH. Born in 1687 in Kittery, ME. William died in Craven, SC on 20 Nov 1724.

Daniel married Anna LORD, daughter of Nathan LORD and Martha TOZIER.

10. Rebecca FURBISH. Born on 19 Apr 1694 in Kittery, ME.

Rebecca married Benjamin GOOLD, son of John GOOLD and Mary CROSMAN.

11. John FURBISH. Born on 19 Apr 1699 in Kittery, York, ME. He was a Lieutenant in the military about 1722. John died in 1755.

In 1729 John married Hannah LITTLEFIELD, daughter of Dependence LITTLEFIELD (abt 1671-18 Apr 1747) & Hannah SNELL (1652-), in Kittery, ME. Born on 6 Aug 1710 in Wells, York, ME. Hannah died abt 1750.

Joanna married Samuel FERNALD, son of Samuel FERNALD and Susanna PAUL.

13. William FURBISH. Born in 1703 in Kittery, ME.

William married Sarah PREBLE.

Dorothy married Joseph HARFORD (1703-1747), son of Nicholas HARFORD and Elizabeth JENKINS.

John married Katherine TOBEY.

24. James FURBISH. Born in Jul 1735 in Kittery, ME. James died in 1790.

On 21 Jan 1768 when James was 32, he married Sarah EMERY, daughter of Samuel EMERY & Bathsheba VOSS, in Kittery, ME. Born on 10 May 1747 in Wells, York, ME.

28. Stephen FURBISH. Born in 1777 in Gray, Cumberland, ME. Stephen died in 1858.

On 16 Oct 1800 when Stephen was 23, he married Dorcas LIBBY, daughter of Daniel LIBBY (1742-25 Nov 1826) & Sarah DOUGHTY (abt 1744-3 May 1831), in Gray, Cumberland, ME. Born in 1773 in Gray, Cumberland, ME.

Stephen FURBISH opened a tannery in Gray, ME around 1800, which became one of the larger tanneries in the state of Maine.

One of their children was:

29 i. Dependence Hart (1806-1882)

Another of their children is believed to be Sophia FURBISH, born about 1799 in Gray, Cumberland, ME. On 29 Dec 1821 in Gray, ME, she married Titus Olcott BROWN, Jr., born 18 Feb 1800. They had a son, John Olcott BROWN, born 3 Nov 1824. Sophia died 14 May 1827.

29. Dependence Hart FURBISH. Born on 29 Sep 1806 in Civil, Portland, Cumberland, ME. Dependence Hart died on 29 Aug 1882, he was 75. Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, ME. Occupation: Chemist.

On 1 Feb 1831 when Dependence Hart was 24, he married Persis Hatch BROWN, daughter of Titus Olcott BROWN (1764-1855) & Susannah Johnson BUNDY (19 Dec 1771-1851), in Gray, Cumberland, ME. Born on 18 Apr 1803/1804 in Civil, Portland, Cumberland, ME.

Dependence Hart FURBISH discovered the process of rendering molasses back into granulated sugar when he was employed as a chemist for J. B. Brown in Portland, ME.

Occupation listed on the 1850 census as "Sugar Baker". The family had two domestic servants living with them.

On 1860 census, he was listed as "Superintendent of Sugar House". They had two domestic servants.

30. Henry Hart FURBISH (photo). Born on 3 Jun 1835 in Portland, Cumberland, ME. Henry Hart died in Bath, NY on 12 Mar 1913, he was 77. Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, ME.

On 9 Sep 1856 when Henry Hart was 21, he first married Harriet A. ORDWAY, daughter of Reuben ORDWAY & Harriet RECORD, in Portland, Cumberland, ME. Born in 1838. Harriet A. died in Portland, Cumberland, ME on 31 Dec 1871, she was 33.

They had the following children:

On the 1870 census, Henry Hart Furbish listed his occupation as "Superintendent of Sugar House". He declared his real estate to be valued at $105,000 and his personal estate to be valued at $10,000. His household included two domestic servants from Ireland and a coachman from New Hampshire named Warren Badger.

Just to get an idea of what these dollar values really mean to us in the 21st century, The American Institue for Economic Research calculator indicates that $105,000 in 1913 (the earliest year that data was available) dollars is roughly equal to $1,900,000 in 2002 dollars. Therefore, it is entirely feasible that Henry Hart's real property was worth in excess of $2,500,000 in 2002 dollars.

Henry Hart FURBISH arrived in Berlin, NH in 1877. There he founded the Forest Fibre Company.

In the 1880 census, Henry Hart's occupation is listed as "Pulp Manufacturer". He lived with his son, Willard, in Berlin, NH. Two domestic servants were noted.

On 20 Sep 1883 when Henry Hart was 48, he second married Susan A EMERY, daughter of George F EMERY. Susan A died on 13 Jan 1890.

In the 1900 census, Henry Hart lived in Portland, ME, as a boarder. His occupation is listed as "Manufacturer of Electrical Goods".

31. Edward Brown FURBISH. Born on 23 May 1837 in Portland, Cumberland, ME. Edward Brown died in Rochester, NY on 27 Apr 1918, he was 80. Occupation: Pastor of First Congregational Church, Lockport, NY.

Edward married Grace Harrison TOWNSEND, daughter of Robert TOWNSEND.

32. Clinton FURBISH. Born on 28 Dec 1838 in Portland, Cumberland, ME.

Clinton married Grace CODMAN.

33. Ellen FURBISH. Born on 3 Oct 1840 in Portland, Cumberland, ME.

Ellen married Robert John CARPENTER (1837-1879), son of James CARPENTER and Sarah McDowell.

On 26 Nov 1892 when Willard Hart was 30, he married Elizabeth Adeline REED (photo), daughter of William Pratt Reed (14 Feb 1839-11 Nov 1880) & Ellen Grace Kimball (2 Sep 1845-Jun 1911), in Talcottville, NY. Born on 11 May 1871 in Columbus, OH. Elizabeth Adeline died in Talcottville, NY in Jun 1903, she was 32.

37. Hattie O FURBISH. Born in 1859 in Portland, Cumberland, ME. Hattie O died bef 1888, she was 29. Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, ME.

On 13 Dec 1879 when Hattie O was 20, she married S BUBIER, in Lewiston, Androscoggin, ME.

38. Henry FURBISH. Born in 1857 in Portland, ME. Henry died in Portland, ME on 10 Sep 1861, he was 4. Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, ME.

39. Persis Emery FURBISH. Born on 14 Jun 1884. Persis Emery died on 24 Oct 1967, she was 83. Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, ME.

On 26 Apr 1905 when Persis Emery was 20, she married Herbert W MASON. Born in Boston, MA.

40. Willard Hart FURBISH Jr. Born on 22 Dec 1895 in Berlin, NH. Willard Hart died in Hopewell, NJ on 20 Aug 1963, he was 67. Buried in Washington Memorial Park, Sandston, VA.

On 9 Jan 1922 when Willard Hart was 26, he married Vesta Sturtevant TAYLOR, daughter of Herman W. TAYLOR (Aug 1873-) & Caroline J "Carrie" FOWLES (Mar 1879-abt 1906). Born on 20 May 1899 in Boston, MA. Vesta Sturtevant died in Richmond, VA on 17 Jan 1962, she was 62.

Willard and Vesta had three children.

Vesta's father, Herman, was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, to American parents. He immigrated to America in 1886 at age 14, and was considered an alien on the 1900 census. He was naturalized in 1911. He worked as a jeweler. According to the 1920 census, they were living in Arlington, MA.

41. Dorothy FURBISH. Born on 16 Aug 1896. Dorothy died in Maine in Mar 1985, she was 88.

Dorothy married Malcolm P. SHARP. Born in 1897 in Chicago, IL.

They had three children.

42. Henry Ordway FURBISH. Born on 29 Jun 1897 in Berlin Falls, NH. Henry Ordway died in Augusta ME on 2 Sep 1953, he was 56.

On 29 Sep 1920 when Henry Ordway was 23, he married Helen Persis THOMPSON, daughter of Dr. William S. THOMPSON, in Augusta, ME. Born in 1897. Helen Persis died on 19 Sep 1984, she was 87.
