Copied from findagrave.com Leonard L. Logoluso Birth: Jun. 4, 1920 Death: Dec. 13, 2006 Leonard L. Logoluso, beloved husband, brother, uncle, and dear friend to many, died peacefully at his home in Fresno following a brief and unexpected battle with cancer. Mr. Logoluso, one of twelve children, was born in Fresno to Italian emigrants Pantaleo Logoluso and Grazzia Mazzili Logoluso, who established what became one of the most prominent farming operations in Madera and Fresno Counties. After giving the commencement address at his Madera High School graduation in 1937 two days before his 17th birthday, the young Leonard worked on the family farm with his four brothers until he was drafted shortly after the onset of World War II. He entered military service on March 12, 1942, exactly ten days after his older brother Joe, and shortly before his younger brother Frank. Mr. Logoluso's wartime service with the U.S. Army Air Corps included initial training for proficiency in Morse Code at Scott Field in Illinois for three months, followed by a surprising temporary assignment to Hammer Field in Fresno, then to Communications with the 8th Air Force 55th Fighter Group at McCord Field in Tacoma, Washington. He recounted tales of the long hot summer of 1942 in Fresno with spartan bunk facilities of tents with dirt floors, and showers consisting of grape stakes holding up canvas stalls fed by a garden hose. He was proud to become part of an elite group selected to study at Bell Telephone & Telegraph School in Los Angeles, where he became proficient in the most sophisticated code ciphering and teletype repairs of the time. He was promoted to Corporal as a result of his specialized training. With the 55th Fighter Group in late 1942, Mr. Logoluso boarded the Aquitania, sister ship to the Lusitania, and zigzagged across the Atlantic for 40 days to avoid enemy submarines, ultimately landing in Glasgow, Scotland, followed by transfer to an air base in Herfordshire, England. After studying at the American Codes and Ciphers School near Wimbledon, he completed a course of Allied English Codes and Ciphers at Oxford University. He was sent on Detached Services to Sawston Hall, England to serve directly under General Woodbury, Commander of the 8th Air Force in England. Meanwhile, the 55th Fighter Group moved to an air base at Colchester, England, where he later joined them as they initiated troop advancements into Germany, ending up based at Kaufburen. Following the Allied victory and a chance reunion with his older brother Joe in Germany, he received an honorable discharge in late 1945 after a stellar turn in the military. Mr. Logoluso returned to Fresno to resume farming in 1945 and in 1950 married his lovely wife, Lucile Matthews, who was a paralegal. That year they built their first home on a Logoluso farm in Madera. In 1955 the family farming operation became a partnership known as Logoluso Bros. following the buyout of his father's farms. The five brothers quickly expanded, purchasing and developing properties throughout Madera, Fresno, and Kern Counties, always taking great pride in their well-manicured ranches. They produced shipping grapes, canning grapes, wine grapes, raisins, and other crops. After the partnership dissolved in 1960, with equal division of properties, Mr. Logoluso purchased more land in Tulare County just north of Delano. In 1971 he incorporated to become Leonard L. Logoluso, Inc., expanding his operation to produce shipping grapes, canning grapes, wine varietal grapes, and grapes for jumbo golden/bleach raisins. He continued to farm until he sold his last property in 2005, retiring fully at that time from the business he loved so dearly. In 1971 he formed Leonard L. Logoluso Investment Properties, and subsequently purchased and maintained coastal parcels at Seascape and Sand Dollar Beach near Santa Cruz, as well as investment properties in Fresno. Mr. and Mrs. Logoluso built their second family home over the water at Seascape in 1971, maintaining their primary residence in Fresno, where they had moved years earlier after the untimely death of their son Larry at age 21. In 1989 they relocated their coastal home from Seascape to Carmel. Mr. Logoluso belonged to many organizations in his lifetime, including service as Director of the Farm Bureau and charter memberships in the Madera County Trade Club and Vino Fino Club of Madera. He served on many corporate and advisory boards, and belonged to four wine co-ops and two cannery co-ops, enjoying his term as President of the Central Valley Cooperative Winery. Mr. Logoluso loved to bowl, sponsoring many teams in Madera and Fresno over the years. Over a forty-year period, he and his teams never missed the annual State Bowling Tournaments, winning championships repeatedly. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, involvement with his son in Little League, and was an avid supporter of Fresno State football, as well as attending baseball and boxing events. He and his wife loved pets, constantly adopting and sharing their home with stray dogs and cats. Mr. Logoluso took great pride in winning numerous blue ribbons, as well as seconds and thirds, as he personally trained and showed his favorite German Shepherd in premier dog shows throughout California. Mr. and Mrs. Logoluso are longtime members of Northwest Church in Fresno, San Joaquin Country Club, Sierra Racquet Club, and Seascape Swim and Racquet Club. They have remained anonymous throughout years of numerous and substantial charitable activities and donations benefiting needy families and crippled children through strong church affiliations. His love and generosity were well-known to friends and family. He is predeceased by his son Larry; sisters, Elizabeth Logoluso, Betty Anelle, Anne Lucchesi, and Josephine Mele; and his brothers, Joseph Logoluso, Tony Logoluso, and Vincent Logoluso. Mr. Logoluso is survived by Lucile Logoluso, his wife of 56 years; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Betty Logoluso of Fresno; sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Leo Bopp of Fresno; sister, Carmela DeLuca of Fresno; sister, Nickie Pieper of Mariposa; sister-in-law, Maxine Logoluso of Madera, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren, dear friends, and staff.
