John Joseph O'Brien was from Dunmonway, County Cork, Ireland. His parents were John O'Brien and Abigail (Abbie) Sweeney both from Dunmonway, County Cork, Ireland. He had three sisters, Katherine Kate, Mary A., and Abigail (Abby) and four brother, Dennis, Michael, James Joesph, and Patrick James. He married Mary Ann Francis O'Brien, Between 1909 - 1910. Mary Ann and John Joseph had five children, four son's, John Franics, James Dennis, Morgan Patrick, Francis Xavier, and one daughter, Mary Abigail.

• Mary Abigail O'Brien married Charles Henry Manion at St. Joseph Cathedral, Hardford, Connecticut. Mary and Charles had two daughters.
• John Franics O'Brien never married.
• James Dennis O'Brien married Ruth Mary McGlynn at St. Joseph's Cathedral, Hartford, Connecticut. James and Ruth had four chidren. James and Ruth had four children.
• Morgan Patrick O'Brien married Anne Gertrude Stutz at St. Gertrude Church, Wilson, Connecticut. Morgan and Anne had three children.
• Francis Xavier O'Brien married Maureen Agues Smith at St. Dominic's Church, Southington, Connecticut.
