bullet LEDIKER Wilma TANQUARY Ledeker, March 2001

Dedication for my Grandchildren:
This is for my Grandchildren, Eryn, John, Reed, Emily and Robbie. Emily, over a year ago you asked me to write something about my philosophy of life. After months of procrastination, this is my attempt. Since it has taken me seventy-three years to learn this important stuff, maybe you’ll all pick up a point or two. If not, that’s okay. You know I’m thinking about you.

Grandma’s Little Life Lessons
I’ve been a reader from the time my mother and dad (your great grandparents) introduced me to the Carnegie Public Library when I was seven years old. So as I thought about a philosophy statement, basing it on a quotation seemed natural. I came up with these words from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians: And finally these three remain, faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Faith, how do I define it? A good thinker, William James, wrote "Believe that life is worth living, and the belief will help create the fact." That definition of faith works for me. Think about it. The tend to turn the statement around in practice-to make us happy. It doesn’t work that way. That attitude puts the responsibility for our happiness on everyone and everything but ourselves. We don’t really think we’re deserving of the good live-whatever we decide it is. We white "Poor me!" I believe we’re creations of God, miraculously made with infinite capabilities. Hamlet said to his friend, "There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamed of in your philosophy, Horatio." I agree with Hamlet. (That must make Shakespear happy.) What possibilities await us if we open our hearts and minds-if we have faith.

Are you grandkids paying attention? I wouldn’t go to all this trouble for just anyone. Actually putting together Grandma’s little life lessons is becoming fun as the old brain gets warmed up. All it needed was some lubricant. You kids are that-oil for my rusty whole.

So, moving right along, we come to hope. Guess what, I have a great quote for that too.
It’s from just about my favorite poet, Emily Dickinson.

Hope is the thing with feathers
that perches in the soul
and sings the tiune without the words
and never stops-at all.

Although she was a reclusive old maid in a small New England town over one hundred years ago, Dickinson traveled the universe in her mind and heart. Wasn’t there a recent Sandra Bullock movie titled"Hope Floats"? Dickinson expressed the same idea only her hope didn’t float, it perched-lightly. Most of us most of the time take ourselves too seriously. We plod heavily instead of perching lightly. I don’t mean life is a joke. It’s a joy! The sad times come, true. Without them we wouldn’t appreciate the happy times. I try to focus on those happy times the light rather than the dark. It works for me.

Now that I’m warmed up, I’ll move on to the third point in the triangle: love. Again I turn to Emily Dickinson who, would you believe, had some choice words on the subject:

That love is all there is
Is all we know of love.

If St. Paul, Emily Dickinson and Grandma all agree that "the greatest of these is love", it must be true. But what is love? Tough question. I love ice cream; I love parties-hardly what Paul and Emily had in mind. The best way I can explain it to myself is to take parental love in its purest form and expand it to all of mankind. A mother and father put the welfare of their child before their own. That doesn’t mean coddling and overindulgence. It means being supportive while at the same time encouraging independence. I read somewhere that love provides roots and wings. Sounds impossible: to be firmly rooted and be able to fly? With love all things are possible. Does this explanation work for you kids? It works for me.

Faith, hope and love. What do you think? I don’t know all the answers, but I can ask lots of questions. We can’t get answers if we don’t ask questions. So keep asking and hoping. I’ll answer as faithfully as I can. You see, I love you. Grandma
