"Smithfield East End Cemetery was established by the German Evangelical Protestant Church of Pgh --- Smithfield Congregation.
It is now the Smithfield United Church of Christ. The church was founded in the 1780s to serve the German speaking
communities in frontier Pittsburgh. The first cemetery was beside the church in downtown Pgh. It then was moved to Troy Hill
on the North Side (1850s). Early in the 20th cent. the Troy Hill Cemetery was closed, many remains were removed to the new
cemetery at Forbes and Dallas Avenues in Squirrel Hill. About 8 years ago the church sold the cemetery to its larger
neighbor -- the Homewood Cemetery -- and all cemetery records were sent there. The key person (archivist) there is Marilyn
Evert. Smithfield Church has all the death records of members of the congregation who were buried at both Troy Hill and East
End. Of course there are many folks buried in the Smithfield East End Cemetery who
were not members of the church and
records of their burials would be at Homewood. The death records at Smithfield were kept by a long line of pastors. Some
gave great details about the individual who died whil others simply gave a name and date. Until the 1920s all the records of
the congregation were in German." -- Rootsweb mail list, John Canning, [email protected]
