Biography of DUNCAN LAMONT CLINCH

CLINCH, Duncan Lamont, soldier, born at "Ard-Lamont," Edgecombe county, North Carolina, 6 April 1787; died in Macon, Georgia, 27 November 1849. He was appointed first lieutenant in the Third Infantry on 1 July 1808, promoted to captain 31 December 1810, appointed lieutenant-colonel of the Forty-Third Regiment, United States Infantry on 20 April 1819, and attained the rank of brigadier-general on 20 April 1829. When the Seminole War began in Florida in 1835, Gen. Clinch was in command of that district. He commanded at the Battle of Ouithlacoochee, 31 December 1835, and displayed the most intrepid courage. In September 1836, he resigned his commission and settled on a plantation near St. Mary's, Georgia. Subsequently he was elected as a Whig to Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John Millen, and served from 15 February 1844, till 3 March 1845. His daughter married Gen. Robert Anderson.
