Biography of ANNA ELEANOR ROOSEVELT

ANNA ELEANOR ROOSEVELT, was born 11 October 1884 in New York, New York. She was home tutored, and at the age of fifteen began a three stay at Allenwood, the Spartan English finishing school outside London, England. After graduation she returned to New York, New York, and taught calisthenics and dancing at the Rivington Street Settlement House. She joined the fledgling Junior League and the Consumers League, and made her debut at the Academy Society Ball. She attended all the debutante parties and was presented at numerous cotillions and balls where she met her fifth cousin FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT. Their engagement was formally announced in November 1904. On 17 March 1905 they were married at the adjoining homes of Eleanor's aunts, Mrs. Henry (Susie) Parish and Mrs. E. Livingston Ludlow. Cousin Alice Roosevelt served as maid of honor, Lathrup Brown served as best man, and the Reverend Dr. Endicott Peabody of Groton officiated. They honeymooned briefly at Hyde Park and then Franklin returned to Columbia Law School. During the summer break they took a long honeymoon in Europe. After law school, Franklin was elected to the New York State Assembly, and the family moved to Albany, New York. In 1913, Franklin was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Eleanor taught social protocol while in Washington. During World War I, she knit for the Red Cross and volunteered at canteens for the soldiers. She became interested in the suffrage movement, supported the League of Nations, and joined the League of Women Voters. After the failed 1920 election, which saw Franklin as the Democratic Vice Presidential candidate, they returned to New York. Eleanor took political "lessons" from Franklin's friend and advisor, Louis Howe. During this time, Franklin had an affair with Lucy Page Mercer. Eleanor found out and offered to divorce him, but it was decided that this would be unwise for the children and for his political career. In 1921, Franklin contracted polio. Eleanor keep Franklin abreast of what was happening in the state. She became his eyes, ears, and legs. When FDR was elected Governor of New York, Eleanor continued to be involved with social causes. She taught at Todhunter School and developed a furniture factory at Val-Kill, her cottage on the Hyde Park grounds. She became involved with newspapers at this time and edited the Women's Democratic News. Because FDR could not walk, she visited hospitals, state homes, jails, and schools. When he didn't heed her advice, she would invite someone to dinner who held the same view as she did, and together they would try to persuade him to change his mind. She was not in favor of his entering the presidential race of 1932, but campaigned hard for his election. When FDR initiated his "Alphabet Soup" social programs, Eleanor traveled around the country reporting her findings to him. She also had her own special projects, such as Arthurdale in West Virginia. It was a self-sustaining homestead community. She also helped develop the National Youth Administration (headed by Lyndon Baines Johnson). In addition to improving the plight of women, the homeless, and the disabled, she advocated better conditions for the blacks. In a famous political and social incident, Eleanor resigned her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution over their refusal to allow black singer Marian Anderson to perform at their Constitution Hall. According to the DAR, they did refuse permission, but only for the day Miss Anderson wanted to appear, as the hall was already booked. Eleanor later showed her support for Miss Anderson by inviting her to sing for the king and queen of England. She also wrote a number of newspaper columns; the most famous was "My Day," which she began writing in 1935 and continued until her death. She also had her own radio show and gave speeches. During World War II, FBI chilled J. Edgar Hoover dubbed her "Rover" because she traveled so much. Because FDR couldn't, she visited the battlefront (in a Red Cross uniform), ate with soldiers in their mess halls, and spent countless hours in hospital wards. She would call families or write them when she returned home. She flew around the world twice and logged more then 500,000 miles. She was not in favor of FDR's running for a third term. When he ran for a fourth term, she knew in her heart that he would not survive. She was speaking at the Sulgrave Club when she was summoned back to the White House and told that FDR was dead. It was she who broke the news to Vice-President Harry Truman. It was on her way to Warm Springs, Georgia, to pick up the president's body that she learned that FDR's long-time mistress, Lucy Mercer, had been with him when he died. After the death of her husband, she left the White House and resumed her writing, teaching, and causes. She was elected to the boards of the Americans for Democratic Action, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the American delegation to the fledgling United Nations. As UN delegate, she was instrumental in getting the Human Rights Amendment passed. She again served the UN when John F. Kennedy became president. She died of aplastic anemia on 7 November 1962 in New York, New York, and was buried in Hyde Park, New York.
